I've had some pretty bad food at schools before but my schools' food takes the cake (actually if they took the cake it'd have squid or red beans in it). It mostly consists of "ass soup (as we lovingly call it)" rice, and whatever side dishes may be.
This is probably the only thing I complain about at my WL so that's a good thing. Now I thought it was only the opinion of the majority of foreign teachers... but the other day I had several "This is yucky", complaints from my Star class. Leading me to believe that the food was some where about

The hagwon I worked at last year would serve us the old food from the Kindergarden lunch. It was cold, greasy, and fookin disgoostin. |

It's awful low quality swill they salt down with many cups of sodium chloride crystals.
Most all restaurants except a cold noodle place had a better representation of Korean food that was quite edible. It's the same in America too where they school cooks are not very good as it's just not look at as being important to provide kids really good tasty food.
Salty broth, the oldest radish kimchee, dried tiny minnows, and a fairly large dollop of rice is typical. Sometimes you get grapes or cuts of that bland yellow fruit and on rare occasion; something western style like fried chicken, but in small quality.
The hagwon I taught at had such horrid lunch the Korean teachers ordered out every day as they couldn't eat it. The kids were always hungry and mad. PS schools tend to be a little better, but not much. I'm talking simple small country schools. I dunno what they're doing in the city. I know the provincial office of education building in Chuncheon serves really good Korean lunch as I ate there one day. How about some delicious baked mandu and other gourmetized Korean menus with beverages? It tends to be where you have more suits or offices in larger places, you get more suitable food. |

Pretty good soup, 1 meat dish that usually ran out before all of the foreign teachers got served, 1 seafood dish, rice and 4 other random kimchee side dishes. It would have been good but it was delivered to the school at 8:30 am. It's also organic. A few teachers complained that there wasn't always enough meat and it was cold and now we're banned from eating it. On Fridays we are allowed to order food and bill it to the school. |

Public school food is hit or miss. It all depends on the "nutritionist" that is in charge of the kitchen.
I've heard some public schools have awesome lunches. They have buffet style with more options. |

My private high school has an outside catering agency handle the food. We teachers are served different, better-quality meals from the students. It's all Korean food, but it's buffet-style and always delicious, much better than the restaurants in the neeighborhood. The other day we were served dolsot bibimbap, brought piping-hot right to our table. In the past we've had freshly grilled galbi and Vietnamese-fusion cuisine, along with the more typical naegmyeon, kimchijeon, and (my favorite) cheyukbbeokum. And considering each meal is only 3,000 won for all you can eat, it's a fantastic bargain. |
