|
|
Are there any westerners that are practicing buddhists out there? Does anyone know of a good temple to practice group or individual meditation in Seoul?
I do know there are many Christians and churches in Seoul that seem to be on the rise, but are there any english services for buddhists?
Any info appreciated. |

P.M. me if you care to. However, I am in the rural south. If I was living in Seoul I would attend this practice. |

Well, you have the dharma talks near the Suyu subway station. The talks take place on Sundays, but I am not sure about a Buddhist group. I am not part of any organized spiritual group in Korea, but I have attended the dharma talks. So, for English services for a Buddhist you can go to Suyu on Sunday's. Google "The Seoul Zen International Center".
I like going there once in a while. |

I went to that one--very nice, if a bit arduous. Templestays are great for learning basics like temple etiquette. The best part for me was discussing Buddhist principles with some of the monks there. I also recommend going if you need any kind of counseling--monks make great counselors, in my experience.
OP--You don't need a group to meditate. I find it easier to meditate in the privacy of my own home. A dark room and a candle, for me, are far more conducive to meditation than being guided in a room full of people.
Also, any temple is fine for meditation. The best one is the one closest to your home.
As for Dhamma talks, check out the channel for the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. |

This is great actually. Its called HwaGyeSa Temple and they have a dharma talk every Sunday at 3pm. If you go there at 1pm you can join in the walking meditation which is interspersed with 20 minute sitting meditations until 3pm. About 50-50 Korean-foreign member ratio. Its a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul and also good chance to meet like minded people...
they also have some really cool English speaking monks from all over the world. If its your first time to meditate they'll also give you a quick briefing..
Go out SuYu station and take a taxi (or walk, but I recommend taxi if its your first time), just say HwaGyeSa (and "GaJuSayYo" = please take me).
maybe see you there! |

Thanks everyone for the great information. I have already attended a templestay, and it was an interesting experience.
The Seoul International Zen center sounds like a place, I'd like to check out sometime. |

There is a group on facebook that is called "Expats in Korean meditation group" . It has recently just started. It is there to help like minded people share information about meditation.
Might also help people to make friends with others on the path. Please post any info you have about group or homesatys on there. |

How far from Suyu station is HwaGyeSa by taxi? Do they have templestays for short periods? Has anyone done it?

If you walked from the station, you might end up walking 15 minutes or so, I am guessing. By taxi, you should get there in about 5-6 minutes.
I don't know anything about temple stays. I am sure you could ask the monks there when you attend the dharma talks. |
