Hey guys,

I just got my Alien Registration Card, and can finally try and open a bank account at HSBC here in Korea (I opened an account in Canada before I left, because they claimed it'd be easier for me to transfer money).

Just wondering what's involved in paying back OSAP . . . . I assume there are a number of people here doing that, so I'd like some advice, and perhaps a list of steps that are necessary (as I am a complete newbie at this).

I should really look up thier international phone number . . . anyone know how to call them from Korea? Can they be reached at any hour that is still daylight here, or must I call them at 3:00AM?

I've got to start making payments soon (whether I want to or not), because October/November is almost upon us -- plus, I don't want any extra interest if I can avoid it.

Thanks for any advce/help.

I found it pretty easy to pay back my OSAP while in Korea.

Set up OSAP as a bill payment with your online banking website. From there, you can transfer money over whenever you want.

Sign up with the student loan website to find out more information, here you can monitor your loan total, interest, and see your updated totals. The bill payment account number will be on your account, call the NSLSC if you need extra help, they should set you up in minutes.

Call them at: 800 2 225-2501 (8am-8pm or 9pm-9am Korean time)

I have my national one set up so that they automatically take the minimum out of my account each month ($50 or so) and then I set it up as a bill for online banking. Then when I get some saved up, I can just transfer the money over to them in a lump sum payment. It takes about 4 days for it to register.

To set it up online, add a payee to your bills section, select Ontario as the province, and type in "student loan" as your keyword. There should be a selection (all the provincial ones plus the national one) and then just select whatever specific one you have the loan from.

Also, unless you have someone with your power of attorney, when they send things that need your signature, they will send it to your Canadian address, then your parents (or whoever) can fax it to you in SK. From there, you can sign it and fax it back to the loan company. It will take about 2 days for the national one to go through.

OSAP makes sure they get their money- it's really straight forward. The only thing I'd add is that they'll automatically take the money from the bank account that you got your last loan deposited to. So if you've changed banks/accounts, you need to make sure you fill out the form with the new info (void cheque) before they take the first payment (November 30th, I think).

Um, I tried calling the number, and after a Korean message, they said in English that the number deosn't exist. Are there any numbers that need to be added?

(I don't call internationally by phone, MSN messenger and Skype are better than phone)
