WASHINGTON (CNN) -- John McCain's victory in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary appears to be paying off.
The senator from Arizona is the front-runner in the battle for the Republican presidential nomination, according to the first national poll taken after the New Hampshire primary.
McCain has the support of 34 percent of registered Republicans in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey out Friday. That's a 21-point jump from the last CNN/Opinion Research poll, taken in December, well before the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary earlier this month... |

He is the most electable Republican with people outside the party. The question has always been: Can he get his party's nomination? It wasn't looking good before New Hampshire.
I think we'll have to wait till SuperTuesday to find out how he measures up against Giuliani with the voters.
I will say he chose an excellent birthday, although the year (1936) may prove a problem. He would be 72 when he took office and that's at the outside edge of acceptability for a lot of people, I think. He'd be 76 at the end of one term. I doubt a lot of people would support him for a second term. When Clinton was nominated, my mom said, 'Good. The presidency is a young man's job." Many people agree. |

As soon as they hear about his black baby (again) they will vote for a more "real" conservative.
Anyone remember that one? |

The fake black baby might have stolen the hubcaps off of Airforce One for drug money!
Not that I'm saying there was racism involved... |

Speaking as someone on the left: Me.
He's the best of a bad bunch. Anyone would be better than "AIDS homos in concentration camps" Huckabee. |

McCain surging, eh? |
Yes, McCain is surging. Except on the internet. On the internet, and especially Youtube, Ron Paul dominates. What does this suggest to you where the internet and reality are concerned, Igotthisguitar?
And how many times will you post this "news?" |

but arizona is rife with problems. he can't run a sun baked sandbox correctly, what makes you think he is fit to be president? he is the baby boomer's bob dole.
the age of both ron paul and mccain is a huge factor. if either of them were "just" 65, they'd have my vote. but they aren't. |

Are you sure you understand the difference between a United States Senator and a state governor? |

I do see the similarities.
Moderates on social issues but conservative on economics. War heroes, whose sacrifices left them with debilitating disfigurements mocked on comedy shows. Very concerned with national security issues.
Oh, and old. |

a governor spends alot of time at home being courted by lobbyists. senators spend alot of time in DC being courted by lobbyists.
for openess sake, my house is in illinois. no one i know back home thinks obama is fit to be president in 2008. lotsa people hope he will win, but no one ( i personaly know)says he is fit.
mccain has been a senator for a long time. what has he done as a senator that merits the white house? governors and senators need to have some semblance of cohesion to operate effectively. given the belly-up state of the housing market (that market that drives so much) and arizona's constant influx of undocumented workers...what advice can he share with the people of the US that he doesn't/couldn't share with his home state? |

I agree! But Richardson is out, and I'll bring myself to vote for Huckabee only after I see fit to have a lobotomy.
Senators are the best candidates left. But maybe that's for the best, as there is a lot of legislation that the new President will have to get passed. |
