|
|
I got my SMOE health check yesterday, it was pretty quick and painless. However, at the end I was sent to get checked by the dentist (which I know isn't required). She smiled and nodded as she tapped each of my teeth, as she was going around for the second time she got really excited and said "OOHHHH cavity!"
I said no. I went to my dentist back home a week before I left (I've only been here for 3 weeks), I highly doubt I have a cavity.
My Questions:
Has anyone had dental work done here? How was it?
If I hadn't had this check I would have never known about this "cavity," how bad would it be if I waited until I return home to get it looked at?
Any help or suggestions would be great!! Thanks |

I had the opposite happen - had a checkup here in Korea and the dentist said everything was great, returned home to Canada and got another checkup 6 months later, and was informed by my dentist that I had to get a root canal and also had several cavities. |

IF you have NHIC insurance (and you will get it with SMOE as soon as you get your ARC) a basic filling costs about 3500 won ($3.50).
The quality of the work varies with the dentist doing it (just like at home). Some are great, some are crap. I have had both. In answer to waiting, well... if it starts to hurt, get it fixed.

Before going back home for summer vacation, our family got our teeth cleaned and checked. We opted to go to a dentist who is the mother of my son's classmate. They found 2 cavities (without the use of x-rays) in my daughter's permanent teeth. Since the cost was going to be high, and they weren't going to use freezing, I decided to get her teeth fixed in Canada. (I once had a small cavity fixed in Korea for free which resulted in a root canal years later.)
In Canada it turns out that she only had one cavity and it was on her baby tooth. With freezing and x-rays, the total bill was cheaper than it would have been in Korea.
Moral of the story - pick your dentist in Korea well. I think the doctors and dentists here are like mechanics back home...hard to find a good one that doesn't cheat you. My adult students have told me the same. |
