... mind-reading and judging?
That's what I've gathered about this supposedly elusive "noonchi." In my opinion, it's unhealthy, and I think it's one of the many reasons Westerners have a difficult time here. In general, Americans discourage judging others (although to say that it doesn't happen is of course false), and it seems they have a hard time adjusting to the sort of judgmental environment here.

I think noonchi 눈치 is more the ability to read a room or a person. Not read character, but more things like day to day emotions. It replaces the need to be animated in facial expression like us foreigners are. |

I have found Koreans lacking in "noochi" if the truth be told. Koreans are blunt, singled minded, me first, get out of the way, people. Civil society takes a rear, backward, third seat here. |

Umm, sorry I have to disagree. Nnchi is not as elusive as you might think. I am able to use it quite effectively even though I am not from Korea. It is a skill that comes with practice. It is a kind of insight and reaching out with feelings (6th sense, I guess). You can judge a situation, with what information know and then add the "what do you think will happen" to it. On the contrary to what you wrote, it is very healthy!!!!!!!
Nnchi also enables people to determine relevant status. This is the culture in 99.9999% of Asia. It is a VERY necessary part of high context cultures.
it is complicated to explain, but you need a grip of the culture to get an idea of what to do. -- I lived in Japan for years and they have a similar concept there as well. I developed this as a survival skill. |

눈치 is like 정 and "face". Too much gets made of it. |

^ Koreans have words like this that westerners cannot possibly understand the meaning of.
Forunately, we foreigners also have a few words that Koreans cannot possibly grasp, such as dignity and character. |

It's simple. If someone is depressed, you use your 눈치 to observe that they are depressed and try to cheer them up. Or, if you think someone might not like the food you and your friends are about to enjoy, you try to get them something else. Theres nothing complicated about it. It's just a way of putting this particular action of considering another persons thoughts into a single word. |
