I bought a Radeon 4850 but I'm having problems. The card is plugged in and running but my computer is not detecting it, so I can't install the drivers.
What is going on?

Got it working by taking out the battery in the motherboard and resetting the BIOS. Now let's see how good this card is.............

I just finished call of duty 4 at 1920x1200 all settings on high, and the framerate was acceptable. Smile

Also managed to snag a 28" monitor for $250. It's pure gaming bliss. I just need more games. More, more!

The driver and the Catalyst Control Centre had some serious issue with Vista 64, so I ended up reverting to XP just to get it going. So, no DX10 as of yet, but in DX9 I can run Crysis on high settings and 2xAA.
I'm waiting for Far Cry 2 and the new Crysis game to see how it handles them.

I tried that driver but it simply failed to install. I did a web search of the error I encountered and there was no easy solution. Also, many other Vista 64 users were reporting various problems. I'm going to get hold of Vista 32-bit and try that, but for now it's good old XP.

Like I say, I didn't know how to fix the problem so I just gave up. I followed the installation instructions to the letter and it didn't work. I have no idea what was causing the error.

I installed an HD4870 on Vista x64 a couple of weeks ago with absolutely no problems.

The x64 drivers from ATI actually seem very good. I haven't had a single game crash since the installation.

I've heard that it's good to download the latest drivers from ATI. Then, when asked if you want to install drivers or uninstall, choose uninstall. This will clean your system out of old drivers better than the Windows uninstall in Control Panel.

When that's done, go back again and choose install.

^ Not bad....but a bit behind the curve.

The HD4870 gets on average about 30-40% more FPS than the 8800GTX. Hell, even the HD4850 can beat out the 8800GTX. Time to go Red Team.

Are you doing SLI with three cards in one box? Or a single 8800GTX in each box? If so....why?

Craigslist back in the USA. Not new, but less than a year old and with over 3 years left on a full coverage warranty, so still quite the deal. Very Happy Guy was asking $400 for it and I only had $200 budgeted for the monitor so I told him I'd give him $250 if he got desperate. Guess he did.
