So, I was sick yesterday. Woke up, felt horrible, called in sick, and slept all day. My co-teacher was okay (I'm at a public school). But as it happens, we have a super-important "camp" this afternoon (Wed.) starting at one.
Well, last night after sleeping about 14 consecutive hours, I woke up and started vomiting. Spent the whole night and morning vomiting, cold-sweating, and shaking on the bathroom floor. About 10 minutes ago, I called my co-teacher . . . hate to miss two days in a row, but I CAN'T come in. She just lost it . . . told me I can't miss this camp, blah blah blah. Yes, I know its inconvenient, but I didn't choose to be sick and I'm bloody throwing up!! I told her I don't even know if I could make it to school without vomiting, let alone teach all day.
She proposed that I come in at 12. I told her I would call her at 11. But seriously, if I still feel like shit, I'm no coming to school. This is common sense. I'm not going to be running out of the room every ten minutes to puke. Not happening. I told her I would gladly go to the hospital this afternoon if I don't go to work . . . but what can I do? When I talked to her on the phone, she didn't seem like she would take this for an answer.
Please, tell me, what can I do? I feel like my head is going to explode . . . At least back me up on this one .. . |

I'd recommend doing your absolute best to get to a doctor this morning. Guaranteed they'll hook you up to an IV to replenish the fluids you've lost through vomiting all night. That usually takes three hours, so there's no way you can work. The doctor would probably even talk to your co-teacher. You'll feel a little better after the IV, the doctor will hold off your co-teacher, and you won't have to go in to work.
What kind of "super-important "camp"" happens in the second week of September anyway? Surely they can put it off until next Wednesday.
Good luck. |

You could try going to your nearest doctor.
Chances are they could give you a shot which may possibly cure you within an hour or two. |

stick to your guns.....they dont understand taking sick leave in this fkn country.
They would rather come to school and make everyone else sick as shit and drag their ass through school all day.
Dont go in, go to a Dr though...for your own sake. |

I find it so funny to see how stuck in the dark ages people can be about health.
The suggestions to get an I.V. and the other one to get a shot are like 1950's thinking.
Both IV's and shots are bad for your health. When you get the flu or a cold you just drink water and let it pass. It is your bodies way of getting rid of toxins.
As for your school that's their problem if they are so stressed that people can not even take sick days. Rest in bed and watch the tele your body needs a rest. It is important to learn to listen to the rythems in your body.
When you are sick respect your body enough to rest. The other option is to keep pushing yourself until you get really sick one day.
I.V.'s are so popular in China and Korea not because they work but because they equal big bucks for the hospitals. |

Yeah, screw going to work..just as long as you're ok for the long holiday weekend.
Personally, I haven't missed a single day (or class) in 3 years. |

| An IV is just to replenish fluids. THey may or may not put anything else into the IV. It isn't bad for you. If you just drink, but are vomiting, than your body is not absorbing any of the fluids - hence the IV. I'm not saying a person should run to the doctor everytime he/she is sick for an IV - but I'm not sure what part of the IV is 'bad' for you. |

Do you have sick days in your contract?
If so use them.
If not then things are a little more difficult.
If they don't like the fact that you are using your sick days contact whoever the next level supervisor is and have it out with them.
Way back when I fell sick the day before a BIG camp at school. Education Minister was coming. I couldn't stand properly, I was shaking and sweating.
Made a point of shaking his hand after wiping my brow and looking sick.
Got told to go home shortly after that. |

| If you're at a public school, you should get 10 sick days per semester. I'm counting that you still have sick days since it is only the begining of the semester. Go to the doctor and get a note, then your sick day should be granted. |

In the UK and such, going to hospital is a big thing and only for major ailments. Here there are good doctors everywhere.
I've been letting a cold run through my system now for over 2 weeks.
Many Koreans go to hospital and get shot which is inexpensive and puts their health back on track in a short while.
My wife is very physically sensitive and when she got some food poisining, her skin became swollen on her hands, legs, arms and back. Our local hospital gave her a shot, and within 2 hours she went from looking chronically ill and scary to being fine again.
I suspected the OP may have some kind of reaction to something she ate, because of the vomitting?
You're right about rest though. The body needs rest and plenty water. I also feel so hungry and weak, I think my body must be using up a lot more energy than normal; so I try to eat well. |

don't bother, the school no doubt knows about your contract sick days and is just trying to bully you so that you'll feel you can never use them. this issue comes up a lot on dave's. i believe your contract also says that you only have to get a doctor's note after a certain number of sick days used. however from your description, i think you maybe should go to a doctor for your own sake...)
be polite, but firm when you say that you cannot come in because you're sick. you may have to repeat it a few times because they'll try all sorts of things to get you to come in. if they're still not getting the idea, mention your sick days in your contract and that you need to go now and rest.
also, be aware that co-teachers will often come to your apartment when you call in sick. i honestly think it's usually because they want to check up on you, but i'm sure some could also be doing this out of kindness.
so, relax and don't worry! |

| Just say, "I'm not coming in. I'm sick," and hang up the phone and turn it off. |

The shot stops the body going through its healing crisis. Healing does not always feel good but it is needed. A runny nose and vomiting gets junk out of the body.
Taking meds and having shots stops the healing and keep the crap inside you. A high temperature and vomiting gets rid of the crap. Trust your body not the doc. Docs are only needed in extreme cases.
The world has this fast paced forget about your body mentality. Drugs and shots are telling the body to stop complaining. Eventually the person who never gets a cold or the flu get something major like cancer. They were too busy even to get sick.
Most people these days could use lots of rest. When you are sick number one rule is to rest. |

D.D.,
Maybe the difference between you and me is the definition of "extreme".
I try awfully hard to avoid going to the doctor, especially in this country where they over-prescribe. For me, the limit is 102 degrees. I have a thermometer at home, and if I hit 102 AND I can't hold down water, I go to the doctor. In Korea, that means I get an IV. I fail to see how an IV is "bad for me" and "dark ages" as you said earlier. But I do usually refuse the medication they try to give me. The two times it has happened the IV has been enough, and I don't fully trust doctors who over-prescribe.
The earlier advice to the OP that I offered was what I did when I was similarly sick - go to the doc, lie down for four hours, get rehydrated, and accept a phone call from your crazy co-teacher while on your back and have the doctor say to her, "He's getting an IV. He can't work." Saves you the trouble of having to deal with your school, gets you feeling better without pumping your system full of the bag full of pills they try to give you, AND you don't have to work.
Good luck OP. |
