Just spent the weekend on Jawol-do, one of the Incheon Islands. I just wanted to share and let everyone know that it's truly a beautiful island. It is hilly, but the main road that runs along the south shore is relatively flat and easy for even a novice bicyclist like myself. At the eastern end of the south shore road, the road turns inland and goes over a pass to the north side of the island where there a couple of hidden coves with gorgeous beaches. The hills are a tad steep getting there, but you can walk your bike up the worst of it.
When you get off the ferry (about 12 or 15 thousand won) turn to your left and walk about a kilometer along the shore and you'll come to a small settlement. There are several minbaks here and most (if not all) will supply a free bike to all tenants.
Food is available on the island but selection is at a minimum. Recommend that you pack in most of your own supplies. Things like beer, soju, cooking gas, etc, are readily available on the island. I noticed no gasoline stations on the island (though there must almost certainly be a supply somewhere there if only for the residents) so if you bring your car or scooter, make sure your tank is full before boarding the ferry.
In fair weather, it's also quite possible to camp on the beach across from the small settlement and the locals don't seem to have any issues with campfires. There's also a small peninsula close to the settlement that becomes a separate small island at high tide. It's fun to explore the shore there and the sunsets are phenomenal. |
