Genetic Variance Greater in Caucasians Than Asians

The genetic variance related to height, weight and body fat of humans was revealed to be wider in Caucasians than Asians, scientists said Friday.
This suggests that the people of different ethnic backgrounds should be treated differently for medical conditions like growth disorders and obesity, Chonnam University's Hur Yoon-mi said.
Huh led a team of researchers who studied the data of 3,735 pairs of Caucasian twins from countries such as the United States, Australia, Finland and the Netherlands born between 1975 and 1993 and compared them with the details of 1,584 twins from South Korea, Japan and China born between 1968 and 1994.
In both males and females, Caucasian twins in general were taller, weighted more and showed a higher percentage of body fat than their East Asian peers. However, the variability in the measures of height, weight and body mass index (BMI) was also consistently larger among Caucasians.
The study also suggested that genetic factors make most of the difference in determining physical features. The researchers found genetic influences greater than environmental factors, such as physical activities and dietary habits, in 91 percent of the variances in height. Genetic differences were also associated with 86 percent of the differences in weight.
``This is one of the first studies about genetic and environmental factors effect on the differences in height, weight and BMI between Caucasians and Asians,'' said Huh.
``This also shows that the prevention or treatment of growth-related disorders and obesity must differ between Caucasians and Asians,'' she said.

Any quick glance around the classroom would provided anectodal evidence to support that finding.
When i was a kid, there were brunettes, blondes, red heads, and blackhaired people in my class. Different eye colors too. Some had freckles, some didn't. There seemed to be a wider range of genetic influences in operation, than there does here in this part of Asia. |

| Most of the findings are a no-brainer. We already know Caucasians are larger than Asians, in general. That's been known for decades. This doesn't really shed any new light on anything. |

The study is also flawed since it doesn't look at Southeast Asians and only Asians from China, Japan, and Korea. That's not a proper sample. |

Flawed as always - koreans generally have flawed thinking...
however - they were looking at the differences between genetic influences versus environmental factors
(Genetic versus physical activities and dietary habits)
and found genetics determine human growth/weight/height/fat more than environmental factors...
Though we already knew that didn't we? |

We've known that since long before the Vietnam War. I remember when they were looking for remains of American soldiers and talked about how the bones of the soldiers varied. The scientist used all that money and came up with nothing new. |
