I've been thinking about buying a Nikon D40 or D40x DSLR. Does anyone here have any experience with this camera? What do you think? How are the pics? Is it easy to learn how to use?
One of my concerns is the auto-focus lens. How difficult is it to find other lenses that will fit this camera?
Also, for those of you that know a thing or two about this kind of thing, what are some other quality cameras in the same price range?
Thanks for all your help.

Save yourself the bucks and get the d40. the extra pixel count on the d40x increases noise (Jesus the missing text thing on Chrome is a real pain in the arse, happening right now.)

My mate has a d40 and he is in love with it. Save the cash on the body and buy some decent glass.

I nearly got the nikon, but decided to go for the canon 450d as i really needed auto exposure bracketing.

thanks for all the replies. Very helpful.
I was thinking about the D40, but people really try to sell the higher pixel count, so I wasn't sure, so thanks.
Can anyone tell me about the availability of Nikon auto-focus lenses in Seoul? What other brand lenses with the D40/D40x take?

Thanks,
A.

You CAN use manual focus lenses on a D40.
If you are doing the "auto" thing, why not just get a point and shoot camera (answer not required but ask yourself "why not" a P&S or "why" a DSLR)?

Glass is easy to find in Yongsan (I'Park or Nanjin Arcade) or Namdaemun but know what you want and what it is worth BEFORE you go shopping.

There are a few websites that list the lenses that will work with AF on a D40/D40x/D60

www.kenrockwell.com
www.nikonians.com

I brought a D40 a few months ago and am very happy with it. It's a great little camera and very easy to use.

I bought a 50mm f1.8 which does not auto focus but even that is not such a hassle although it takes a little practice to focus it quickly (I'm not quite there yet !!)

All new nikon lenses are fully compatible with the D40 and sigma, tamron and tokina all make 3rd party lenses that will work.

yea i just got a d40x. i love it. happened to get a decent deal on the 40x so i decided to spend a little extra cash and go with that instead of the 40. its easy to learn, fun to play with and light enough that it goes everywhere with me and i don't notice its weight in my bags.

definitely recommend either. if you want the higher pixel count, and can find a good deal, go for it. but its not worth buying a 40x vs a 40 new.

Thanks again for all your help.
I decided to go with the D40 and I'm very happy with it. It's a little confusing because I don't know how to use all the options or terminology, but I'm doing a lot of research and trial and error.
I went out on Sunday and took some nice pics... it's all very exciting to have a new hobby, to be able to see Seoul in a new way after all these years.
So, I would recommend the D40 for someone starting out with DSLRs who wants options and (relative) ease of use.

I have a D40. Currently looking at getting it repaired. A fantastic camera, especially when you install a katzeye in it.

I only shoot in manual mode, and have loved every minute of it.

The only gripe I have is sensor cleaning. If you mess up, you can really mess up, but that goes for any DSLR.

The D40 is a great starter camera.

Perhaps because of the larger sensor and superior image quality on a DSLR. Do you really manually focus EVERY shot you take?

There are far more important differences between P&S cameras and DSLRs than auto-focus.

I have a bridge camera (s100fs), which has the ability to focus manually, but only need to use it on macro shots.

Which is why I said that I wasn't really looking for an answer. There are any multitude of reasons why a person moves up to DSLR from P&S or a bridge camera. They are personal and each person has their own reasons for wanting to make the move.

There are pros and cons to all 3 kinds... I was just suggesting a personal introspection before shelling out the bucks, 400-500k won depending on where you go, for the d40 kit or much more for other models of DSLR.

Like I said in the 3rd post in this thread, I have a D40 and I am very happy with it. It was a great entry level DSLR at an affordable price. A good way to get my feet wet in the DSLR world without breaking the bank.

I also had a Pentax K1000 back before the days of DSLR and it was also a good learning / work horse camera in the days of film.
