I just found out this morning that my local Office of Education wants me to spend one day a week teaching adults during my next contract. I was under the impression that EPIK was about teaching elementary, middle, high school students, and helping english teachers speak english better, NOT shopping english for ajjummas. At least, that's what the website says. Of course the contract says anywhere, anyhow, anytime, for as much time as the OofE says. Good grief. Thoughts?
The other question is about money for extra work locations.
As far as I know, I'm expected to work at three schools and the Office of Educaton. Two of the schools are at the same location. They are rural middle and high schools on the same campus. I would see them on the same day. To me that is still 4 locations...2 middle schools, 1 high school, 1 OofE. The first alternate location is +100,000/month, and the second alternate (3 total) is +150,000/month. Can I assume that 4 total locations would be +200,000/month?
I have to say I'm pretty dissapointed that the Office of Education has decided to take a good thing and screw it up. But hey, that's what Korea is all about, isn't it? |

If the first outside location is 100,000 then two mre should be 300,000. Ans don't let them try to give you any looks like u r throwing their puppy in a wood chipper and try to say your math is wrong. |

The old mod song" Anywhere anyhow Anyway," Should be the Theme song for EPIK.
Epik can basically make you do whatever they want. Dormitory in the sticks. Teaching bored bitter teachers who would rather be at a noraebong. Living in a tiny room that you can spit and hit the opposite wall.
On the other hand it has some pretty sweet deals. The key is to nogotiate in advance. Once you choose the job and they assign you somewhere you don't like there's not much you can do. Other then quit. It's still better than 90% hogwan deals. |

Well, when I signed my contract renewal in July, I understood I would be staying at my school. It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I found out (quite by accident I might add) that I was to be moved. My current school has been less than forthcoming regarding this. I think it has something to do with the change of principals. The last principal thought I was wonderful and enjoyed sitting in on my classes. This principal thinks English education is a waste of resources and a dilution of Korean culture. Whatever.
Spliff. The remuneration page from the EPIK website lists the first extra school as 100,000, the second as 150,000. Hence the (my) extrapolation to 200,000 with 3 extra locations. Me demanding 100,000 per school sounds great, but it ain't gonna fly. I was just curious as to what experiences people have had with calculating this and whether EPIKs' calculations were straight or funky. |

I'd imagine that as your first two schools are at the same location, then I doubt they'll give you the extra allowance for it. They'll probably pay you for the other school (extra 100,000), but I couldn't say for sure about the OofE gig. It's possible I suppose, but knowing how tight they generally are with multiple school allowances I'd very much doubt it. Suppose it depends on the distance etc. |

The primary work location is a single school. Locations 2 and 3 are a middle and high school on the same plot of land about 30 minutes away by car. They are rural, and very small, less than 60 students at each. The 4th location is the office of education.
The way I interpret it; and given that I'm feeling a little abused, I'm more inclined to interpret the EPIK website more strictly, is that regardless of WHERE the places are, they are in fact 4 separate entities.
By way of argument, using the rationale of distance determining eligibility, if I were to teach at 20 different schools a month, I wouldn't be owed any extra if they were all side by side. Yes, yes, not a real possibility, but if they are trying to figure out how to make the rock bleed, at last they can pay the rock properly.
Grrr. |
