Please give me a heads up. I am looking for the best program online with the most rigorous requirements to get in. But please no new school univ., they charge 1k dollars per credit!

Look into Michigan State University (or maybe it was the Univ. of Michigan). I think they have a few online options (can't remember if they're TESOL/Linguistics or not). They were ranked pretty high.

I, too, am looking for such a program. No grant magnets. No 'discount U' outfits. It's gotta be respected, and it's gotta be online, at least for most of the program. Maybe even all of it. I can no longer afford the opportunity cost of sitting in a classroom everyday instead of working. While I work towards my degree, I must also earn mulla.

I know a guy doing his Ph.D. at UBC who got his MA on-line at U of S. Queensland, which I understand isn't exactly the most rigorous program out there.

To get a masters TESOL degree, what does your undergrad have to be in? My undergrad is in Fine Arts, so I was wondering if it is still possible to get in to a Masters. I am not looking for the "best possible" option, but just a generally accepted online MA in teaching English.

"The best" is surely a relative title, but there are many respected universities that offer an M.A. in our field that can lead to a Phd. I am just starting my M.A. TESOL with The University of Manchester. It is, as a whole, ranked 40th in the world, but the Education department was rated a 4 of 5 at the last RAE posting. This may change once the new ratings for 2008 are released early next year but it is something to consider. For me, that wasn't a problem, but others may look for a program with a 5 rating...each to their own. It is done entirely online, taking three years to complete. Again, some courses may be finished in two years, but the reputation of this university led me to persue, and ultimately accept, a place with them.

The other university I was considering was The University of Nottingham. Both of these universities offer an application process which is done completely online...no paperwork needed. Just off the top of my head, some others to consider would be The University of Bath, Leicester, Sheffield Hallam, Birmingham, Institute of Education, U of Reading, Surrey and in America, UMASS. For some reason or another, there are a lot more U.K. schools offering degrees in ESL than there are in my home country, USA. I personally have no problem with doing my studies at an international university, as my undergraduate studies where finished in The Philippines, but again this will depend on the person.

I have a few friends who did their MA (or double MA) there. 8 courses, no thesis, which is a pretty light load (I had to do 10 courses, a thesis, write 3 grad exams, and pass a foreign language requirement for mine!) Courses looked interesting to do. Don't know the cost.

Oh yeah. There IS that tiny aspect.

My program must be relatively cheap as well. I'm not paying 13K USD for a (mostly) online degree. Nope. Ain't gonna do it. It was bad enough to pay 1600 for a TESOL cert + airfare to the cert program.

There's that TESOL reality thing, after all. I pay 13K for a program and it takes me 20 years to recover that investment when factoring in the income I'll earn in most countries after getting the MA. Shit. It's Korea or the middle east, and maybe Europe if I can get lucky and find a teaching job that doesn't require an EU passport. That's about it. The rest pay peanuts. Yeah, my tuition had better be a lot less than 13K.
