Is toxic chocolate from China in Korea?
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2895105

September 20, 2008
Some Chinese-made chocolates contaminated with the toxic chemical melamine might have made it into the Korean market, the KCS and the Korea Food and Drug Administration estimate

The KCS said 3,031 tons of chocolate worth $8.8 million were imported this year until last month from China. We already embarked on an investigation to find out what snacks contain the melamine-tainted powdered milk, said Seo Kab-jong of the KFDA.

Since prices of Chinese chocolates are lower than chocolate products of other countries, Korea has been importing a substantial amount of Chinese chocolates over the past years. Last year, 5,467 tons worth $14.6 million were imported from China. In 2006, Korea imported 5,029 tons.

Responding to the news of potential toxic chocolates, local snack makers said they do not use China-imported chocolate products. We usually use chocolates imported from Singapore and other European countries, said an official of Nongshim.

However, the KFDA said when a small amount of chocolate is used in snacks, snack makers do not declare origin of chocolates they use.

Chocolate products manufactured by the nations small and midsized companies could be made with Chinese chocolate because of its cheap prices, said experts.

Sometimes I wish some of the things you post would come without any input. Laughing

Imported Chinese Butter to Be Inspected

By Park Si-soo
Staff Reporter

The government plans to launch inspections of butter imported from China as public distrust over dairy products with a ``Made in China'' label increases.
The move comes amid the melamine-contaminated baby formula scandal, which has so far left four infants dead and 6,200 others have developed kidney stones.

The plan was announced Friday after the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that roughly 182 tons of butter had been imported since February.

``We confirmed that no dairy products have been imported from China as yet. To relieve public concern, however, the government decided to inspect all Chinese products with milk ingredients,'' an agriculture ministry official said.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration said roughly 4,600 tons of Chinese food with dairy ingredients in the form of chocolate and snacks have been imported from China so far this year.

According to the ministry, three Chinese companies that produced the imported butter in question were not among the 22 Chinese firms reported to have produced melamine-contaminated baby formula.

``The three Chinese firms have nothing to do with the ongoing scandal so their products are safe,'' the official said.

The inspection will be completed in a week.

Melamine is used in the production of plastics and fertilizers and is banned from use in food production.

AP reported that Chinese police have arrested 18 people as the government there expanded its crackdown on those involved in the tainted milk powder scandal. Six people are accused of selling the industrial chemical melamine. The other 12 people arrested were milk suppliers accused of selling contaminated milk.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Friday said it has found traces of melamine in locally circulated fish food.
The feed was made by a company in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province that produced the feed using powered squid, the ministry said.

Koreans NEVER protest against China Rolling Eyes , so nothing will probably come from any of this, other than sick or deceased Koreans who used these products.

Yes, I've noticed that, too.

Why is that, I wonder?

(And what, exactly, is a powered squid? Could malamine be good for squid's libido, or something? That's it; Korea apologists will just say malamine is good for you, like germs.)

I'm afraid of chemicals being in Asian food, because they use chemicals to speed up processes of production in just about everything. I'm sure American processed foods are laden with chemicals too so it's best to buy fresh things and cook for yourself. I only hope that these small time domestic Korean farmers are not doing that who provide the expensive limited supply of apples, potatoes, beef, pork, and other things. The Korean beer is the worse I've ever drank, because they put chemicals in it to speed up brewing to get it out the door sooner to produce more and more since it's in high demand. Totally a poisonous assault on your life and well being so I chose not to drink it. Haven't had one since last November.

Anything in high demand will get produced in mass quantity in a way that cuts corners by adding chemicals.

I don't eat chocolate in Asia nor do I eat Hershey's in America. I only like Ghirardelli from California and European chocolate such as Lindt.
