Hi guys,
A couple friends of mine came over here this september and they just got their alien cards and are trying to get cell phones, but they're getting the run-around. They have been told they need to put down a big deposit and pay some fees upfront to get a phone. I don't know too much about this because my English teacher was kind enough to put my phone is his name to bypass a lot of the bs. Does anybody here have any suggestions for these 2? Are any phone companies better than others for foreigners? Any help is greatly appreciated. |

If they have a samsung card than no deposit at ktf. I've heard that sk in Seoul is easy to get a phone on plan w/out deposit. I friend of mines wife here on Dave's helped me get one for my wife but I wouldn't feel comfortable giving his name out and I think w/ ktf/kt you need a Korean credit card for a no-deposit deal. Good luck! Try SK in Gangnam station. |

I still can't get one either as I'm having the same problems like the OP's friends are having. Is the Seoul Global Center open on Saturdays? I understand TechnoMart at Ganbyeon station cells prepaid card phones, but I haven't gone to Seoul yet to shop to inquire. I also heard that LG global services store in Seoul has plan phones available to foreigners. I just haven't got up there yet to shop and don't have weekday time to be in Seoul. My accountant told me 1 week ago that she could get me a phone on 3 year contract, but couldn't tell me how much per month it would cost. I also didn't want a 3 year contract nor pay $150 for a phone and $50 for activation without even knowing how many minutes I get and what it costs. This is fruity. Why can't I be appropriately accommodated? Phone people are retards.
It infuriates me that I'm having such problems, but at least I don't need the phone to make money or job search. I just want to be more connected to the people I've met here which is not an unreasonable need, especially if living and working alone in a small town. I personally feel that a rural/small town job ought to set you up with a cell phone, but they don't. Maybe it's an issue the POE could had helped us all with, because if I had problem, then many other teachers are phoneless too. Often a co-teacher or someone nice will put a foreigner on their cell plan, but I'm outta luck on that as it's not offered to me.
Is there anything wrong with getting a Seoul phone to use out in rural Gangwondo? Might that incur more service charges to live outside the phones local area? |

I don't think they are open on Saturday. But, you may want to call them to see what they can do for you (as it is their goal to help foreigners in Korea). |

Follow these easy steps:
1.) Go to an LG store
2.) Point to a phone you want
3.) Show them your ARC and bank book
4.) Pay for the phone
5.) Sign your name on the contract for the fewest options (most of them are for stupid things like extra ringtones, etc.)
6.) Walk out with your phone |

Agreed. For post-paid phone plans, these are your options:
KTF: If you have a Korean credit card, you can do it. If you don't, you can't.
SK: 200k deposit. *beep* that.
LG: All you need is an ARC and bank book. No deposit.
Just make sure you go to a proper LG store, not one that works for all 3 companies. They're much more likely to know what they're doing. |

I had no trouble getting a phone with KTF. I had asked around some of the sidewalk table phone sellers, but they wanted a deposit and contract (nope). Its best to go to a proper brand store like BL said since they know what they have and what the terms are. I've had friends get phones though SK and have heard they're decent. Like kprrok says just show them your residence card and bank card/book and you'll have your phone. Good Luck. |
