I would like to know about Hwaseong in Gyeonggi-do province. They say it is 20 minutes from Jebu Island. What is it like living out there? Is it easy to commute to Seoul from there? |

Hwaseong sucks! It's out in the middle of hellwhere.
The area is famous for being the site of South Korea's first known serial killings when 10 murders - presumably by the same killer - took place there between the years of 1986 to 1991.[4] The killer was never caught. A dramatization of the case, Memories of Murder was made by Bong Joon-ho in Korea in 2003.
In 1999, the Sealand Youth Training Center Fire killed 23 people, including some children.[5] |
i read about the serial killer on wikipedia and fire. Have you lived there? |

I have traveled through the area (LOTS) and a lot of it can be VERY rural AND it can take from 10 minutes (east part of the county) to over an hour (west end and Jebu-do) to get to Suwon station (and another 30-60 minutes to get from there to Seoul) -
depending on WHERE you end up at.

Since most schools in Hwaseong are located near Byeongjeom station....or out in Dongtan...find out your proximity to Byeongjeom station first.
Hwaseong is pretty rural for the most part...but you're two subway stops from Suwon station...and plenty of city buses run to other busier districts of Suwon regularly.
The subway isn't always the best option for going to Seoul.
Bus 1560 runs every 20 minutes or so bound for Gangnam station. At the right time with decent traffic...you can make Gangnam in about 45 minutes flat.
For the subway...wait for the Yongsan express train. It doesn't stop at every little station and takes about 30 minutes or less to Yongsan station.
Personally...I liked the area. Quiet for the work-week but it has all your basic needs...and a little more in terms of outdoor recreation than a lot of other areas.
If you're the social type...do a facebook search for Dongtan Clan...they're a bunch of my old co-workers and friends we hang out with on a pretty regular basis.
Good luck out there. PM me if you ever need any specific info from someone who just finished a year there. |

It not a bad area. You might want to buy a car. You would be about 90 minutes by train to seoul and 10 minutes to Suwon. Going south its about 15 minutes to Songtan which has a lot of foreign food restaruants and many Americans GI's. |

20 minutes from Jebu-do sounds like Namyang.
That's 45-50 minutes by bus to either Suwon station or GeumJeong Station.
From Geumjong its about 30mins to South West Seoul by Subway.
There's a lot of action by Suwon station.
I work about 10-15minutes closer to Suwon (on the same bus route) and its alright... |

The Byeongjeom station is about 5 min aways and seoul and itawoen is abit far like an hour. I like it, its a bit noisy during rush hour but other then that, i havent found it to be too bad. i like the quite and i havent seen the farmland that people have sopke of. I guess its a big area. Its all dependent on what you want. Also Anyang isnt too far. |

Hey you live maybe a 10 minute walk from me. I'm about 10mins from Lotte Cinema. I know this town is huge but I haven't managed to get out from the main area around Byeongjeom station. Like someone else mentioned if you do the Facebook thing there's also a group called "I live in Hwaseong" they've got a party in Seoul planned for next weekend...so far I think there's something like 50 people planning on going already.
Subway up to Seoul direct (Seoul station/Yongsan/Itaewon) is about 80-90 mins. I normally go by subway to Suwon (10 mins or less) then jump over to Korail and take a train up to Yongsan/Seoul station which is 35 mins. I like living down in this area better than living in Suwon, but it's nice to be able to pop up to Suwon and Seoul or down to Songtan if I feel the need. |

I've lived in Namyang for two years going on my third.
It's a pretty small town although it has everything you need.
The only commercial shops are Lotteria and the Tour le Jours bakery.
It's a 30 minute bus ride to Jebudo and a 30-40 minute bus ride to Suwon station depending on the bus and traffic.
The school I teach at, Seosin Elementary School which is ten minutes from Jebudo, is completely rural.
It does suck going to Seoul though.
After the 30-40 minutes to Suwon Station another 30-60 minutes to get to your destination in Seoul.
But living in humungous cities all my life in the states, I wanted a break.
Like was stated by someone else, it all depends on what you want I guess. |
