Hello. Just need some advice about incorporating some Business Radio into a class lesson. What is the best way to download a business program from the radio for a lesson? I am thinking about incorporating BBC Radio for the class and would like some advice about how best to download audio and prepare a lesson.

What went right and what areas are best to consider when preparing a business radio lesson.

If anyone could provide some advice as well as particular business radio shows to download, that would be appreciated. I am also interested in radio and would also like to know how best to download BBC News or CNN for a Business News Class.

Never used radio or news in my BE classes (so long ago!)...how do you plan on using them?

edit: Use QuickTime Pro (available via torrent sites) to download video, and audacity to record radio broadcasts to your PC if you can't get them streamed.

You'll have to capture most video streams. WMR is your best all around bet. Just make sure to be able to clear the cache of it, so it will pick up the stream.

If that is too technical, go to http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/ They have lots of business oriented news with transcripts and quiz. New each day.

Also, http://www.voanews.com/specialenglish/ has some good stuff in the business area.

What I'd recommend is the Semi - streams of most business channels. Use our EFL Classroom 2.0 Teacher's TV (click it on the site map, opening page). Try Bloomberg. That station is repetitive but I also have a few other business streams like the BBC Click. They will be the same each day. So no worries, you can prepare.

There are some ESL business podcasts around but all are pretty trashy.

There's a program called SoundTap, which I've used before. Took a while to get the hang of it and you need to switch off/deactivate all your PC sounds as the program picks up all sounds generated, but it's good for copying audio that you can't otherwise download/save etc.

I think that there's also an audio capture program that you can download in Firefox, but I've not come across it myself yet.

From experience, and as someone who used to listen to a lot of stuff on both BBC radio 4 and 5Live, I think a lot of the BBC podcast/programmes etc might be too difficult to utilise in the typical classroom. The conversations are probably spoken far too quickly for most students to follow and you'll need to spend a lot of time preparing transcripts as well as spending a good deal of time pre-teaching lots of vocabulary.

Thanks for the advice all.

I just believe that radio programs (small snippets though) could be used well in the classroom. I find that business professionals lack the real business English that can't taught from a textbook and would like to use authentic material.

Camstudio will capture all audio and video going to your screen and make a file with the codec of your choice. I use it al the time for videos in my exective classes.
