Can anyone please tell me how it takes for me to obtain the confirmation number from the labor authorities in Korea once the school supplies them with all required documentation? In other words, if a school decides to hire me May 1, when will I get the number?
Am I required to submit a USA FBI clearance or is there a substitute? The Korean Embassy in Canberra states a clearance from the "central" government of a country. It will take forever to get that. I have heard of Americans trying to get work/residence visas in Australia waiting for months for this document.
I am a US citizen in Australia temporarily. From the Korean Embassy in Canberra website it states that I have to apply to a Korean post in my home country unless I have had an E-2 visa before. I was hoping to apply from Australia rather than flying back to the USA then on to Korea. I guess that is impossible?
My BA diploma is in storage in the USA, not with me in Australia. It seems that I must get it out for the Korean post to sight. Any exceptions that any of you have come across?

From the time the school submits all required documentation to the local Immigration branch office, the usual processing time is 5�10 business days (1-2 weeks, but possibly longer in the case of intervening holidays; May 5th and 12th are both national holidays, which may slow things down).

Third country visa issuance is possible in two cases:- Previous holders of an E-series visa with no criminal history in Korea;
- Persons whose degrees have been verified by the Korean Council for University Education
Since you've never had an E-2 before, your employer in Korea would need to get your degree verified. This involves filling out some forms and waiting 3-4 weeks. If your employer can't or won't get your degree verified by the KCUE, you're most likely going to have to go back to the US. BUT... it might be worth a call to the Korean Embassy in Canberra (or the Consulate in Sydney, depending on where you are). Explain your situation and see if they'll let you slide. After all, the staff there should speak English, so if an interview's necessary they can do one.

You can either dig up your diploma, order a replacement, or get your university to issue a certificate of graduation which must then be notarized and apostilled. You have to produce some sort of diploma or certificate, and it must bear the requisite authentication unless it's the actual diploma. Consulate verification of diplomas is not the same as degrees being verified by the Korean Council for University Education. But as you know having been through the process at least once already are the thing which allows you to provide a copy rather than your original diploma.

Thanks for your replies.
A recruiter in Sydney says the above group in Korea can certify my original BA I must post them.
I emailed both the embassy in Canberra and consulate in Sydney to verify if this advice was accurate. Canberra said I could get the visa in Australia, Sydney said I had to return to the USA! Two different answers! |

| If you are making a trip to Fukuoka, the best advice I can give is to call ahead to make sure that you will be able to get your visa. My fiance and I had to make 2 visa runs to Fukuoka because the immigration office in Seoul gave my employer the wrong information about the visa office. When we were at the consulate in Fukuoka, we also met about 5 other people who had their visa approval number issued but were denied the visa once they got there. I don't remember the number for the consulate, but ask for Ms. Ko. She will check to make sure that you can get your visa once you get in to Japan. |
