But it costs $155!??!?! Not worth that at all, in my opinion. I built a desktop to run OSX. I had to download a patched version of the Leopard install DVD, but then booted it up and it worked fine. I did have to replace one file as my video wasn't displaying properly, but thats cuz I didn't select the correct patch.
I know this dongle is there to make it easy so you don't have to select any patches, but I would never pay that kind of money. If you knew enough to buy the correct hardware for the dongle, then you know enough to then select the according patches!! |

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but how difficult is it to install OSX on a PC?
I've heard that it depends on your hardware. Is this true? |

$155 doesn't seem to be that much to pay in exchange for being able to run a non-"patched" (read: hacked) version of the OS, as well as not having to wait for "patched" versions of OS updates and patches.
And it's still way cheaper than Apple-branded hardware. |

Think nothing of it; you're entirely on-topic. ^^
I've never attempted to install OS X on a PC, but to my knowledge it requires a hacked/patched installation. A stock copy of the OS won't get it done.
The purpose of the dongle (which was the topic of my OP) is to get rid of that problem. Granted, it only works with certain hardware, but the list is actually fairly extensive, If you build a system from the list, and install this dongle on the internal USB, then you can run an out-of-the-box copy of OS X. |

I guess some people will be willing to pay that much for it. I'm sure in time the contents of that dongle will make its way onto the torrent sites and be available for all. |

That would be something I'd be willing to look at. Unfortunately, I'm not going to downgrade my VGA just to do it. I still wish I could do this with any computer so I don't have to pay Apple's SUPER-EXPENSIVE hardware costs. |

You need to browse the wiki and make sure your hardware is compatible. I bought a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3, Sigma GeForce 7300GS, Intel Core2Duo E4500 (2.2GHz), 2GB ram, 550watt PSU.
Then just download a patched version of Leopard (see Mininova, Piratebay), I went with a Kalyway release. When the installation menu comes up, just make sure you also tick the correct patches for your hardware and away you go. It's very easy if you bought compatible hardware. I bought the above specifically to run OSX and have never had any problems. It works perfectly!! |

How can I tell if my hardware is compatible? Is there a checklist out there? |

It appears that none of my hardware is listed. Does that mean it will definitely not be possible to do? |

If it's not listed, then it probably won't. If by chance it is possible, then you will probably need to dink around with patches and stuff. But then again, you may get lucky and it might just work.
Did you check each release?? The link I gave above was only for 10.5.1. Go here and check the others. You might get lucky. |

Isn't the reason that OSX works so well performance wise because of the fact that Apple builds both the OS and the hardware? THey don't have to support a wide range of drivers like windows does so the software and hardware works better together and more efficiently doesn't it? Just curious, never actually seen non-apple hardware running OSX so I don't know how it is, but I actually like the appearance of the Apple hardware also. |
