Details aside: I am being asked to, and want to, volunteer some hours to my school while I'm on a 30 day entry visa waiting for paperwork for an E2 visa to come in.

Because of why I'm off the visa right now in the first place, I'm not going to take just anyone's word that this is legal, and I absolutely refuse to do so if it is illegal or I have any doubts about it. I'm having trouble finding information on just a regular tourist visa, or volunteer work at all for a foreigner.

Anyone know at all?

IT is ILLEGAL for you to "volunteer" your service to someone who will profit from said service (your school).

Immigration won't believe that it is "volunteer" service if it is for your future employer.

It is considered to be an activity not permitted under your current status of sojourn and it is an offense under the immigration act.

IF you are caught you WILL get a black mark in your file, you will PROBABLY be fined, you will LIKELY have your visa application denied and would potentially be subject to an exit order or, worst case, deportation.

Has it been done before - yes, more times than you can count - BUT it is still illegal and YOU are the one who faces the risks IF the crap hits the fan.

Fantastic, thank you. Is there a link I can have that I can show to my employer? She's been really understanding and patient thus far, but after Friday's discussion I'm suspecting that she won't be too much longer (and understandably so, to be honest). I have an upper hand on this, but I don't want to be pushing it without specifics to show.

I would call immigration/the embassy about it, but my dealings with them thus far... Mmm, have already had me partly in trouble due to person a saying (and even writing/signing) one thing but person b saying something else and refusing to accept the previous.

Ttompatz is exactly right. Some people have been in hot water for volunteering. Most never get looked at. Many called their immi office and got permission (get the name of the officer if you do that).

Over a year ago, immigration gave a group of volunteer actors this link so they could register for activities beyond their visa and volunteer legally. Go ahead and call the hotline as ttompatz said, and here's that link:
