... when their clueless absent-minded idiot teacher can't remember what part of the book he has and hasn't covered and his desk is too messy to keep track of anything he can go check with them, thus avoiding a chorus of 'hassaeyo!'s and 20 minutes to kill with no materials planned the next lesson.

Sorry to say, but it sounds like the perfect reason for a student not to keep a portfolios.

Beyond my crass remark, isn't it the teachers job, and not the students (unless the student(s) are suck-ups), to keep track of what you have and have not covered in class.
