|

I'm looking for a camera that takes good night shots (preferably a point and shoot, but might consider a DLSR). I currently have an 8MP Olympus point-and-shoot and the night shots are fair at best. (If I go flashless, the pictures come out dark and grainy. If there are people in the foreground and the flash is on, the background doesn't even show in the picture.)
I've seen really nice night shots from point-and-shoots that didn't require a tripod. I just don't know the brand or model... simply know they're out there!
I'll prob post this up in the tech forum, but thought I'd throw it out here in case anyone's looking to sell.
Mahalo!

The reigning king of regular, low-light, point and shoot cameras is the Fuji F31fd. I had one (foolishly sold it), and could shoot clean pix at 800 iso, no problem. Very sharp lens and quick focus, too. Driven by the marketing ploy of ever greater megapixels, Fuji discontinued it. However, there are still a few sellers on Danawa.com that list it.
Another option might be the Sigma DP1, but it's very expensive and has some serious design/operation problems. |

Yeah, Fuji F20/F30/F31fd are all pretty similar. All are known to be fantastic performers in low light (and not so bad during the day too)...
I have the F30. It's great! Unfortunately for the OP, it seems like it's actually appreciating in value, so it won't be cheap.
the 850is is a decent cam, and the is helps somewhat in the dark, but 'is' technology does nothing to stop the blurriness of a moving subject. Apart from that, it has the same weak high-iso of other point and shoots. (but is great during the day!) |

| You might want to consider using Photoshop or something like that to reduce grain and bring out the shadows in the dark backgrounds of your pics. It's amazing what it can do. |

You could also try noise ninja, but I'm not sure how it will work as most P&S cameras don't have a cap so you can take a black/dark picture before you take one of your subject.
Another option is the older Canon DSLRs. An XT/XTI will perform much better in low light than my D40. And you could probably pick one up for the price of a P&S. |
