I'm considering a job offer in Pohang, going to be talking to the director on the phone this evening, but I'm wondering if it's the right move.

I've perused all of the Pohang literature on daves, and I couldn't help but notice that some people find the air pollution bad in Pohang. There's that POSCO steel plant, which truthfully has me worried. What does a steel plant do to the air quality in a city?!

I know Korea doesn't have great air quality, but is Pohang one of the danger zones?

If air quality is important in your decision making as it has been in mine then avoid Pohang, Daegu and the Seoul area for sure. Masan too.

I am in a river valley minutes from the south coast and I appreciate the fresh air almost daily.

That said, Pohang is on the coast and sometimes the air is pretty good. But sometimes it stinks like the Windsor-Detroit area I lived in during grad school. Ugh.

So, if air quality is a big factor for you then the answer is NO, it's not the right move for you.

There are so many ESL jobs in so many cities, towns and corners of this country that one does not have to "go where the jobs are" unless one wants to work OT and privates all the time. Go based on your priorities. I went to Geoje Island an hour south of Busan for over three years largely because of the fresh air from the pacific systems. It's a shipbuilding economy, which means the water isn't great, but the air is spectacular. Where I am now was great, but at times during the year the friggin' farmers burn their fields and as well the smoke smell from their burning of piles of whatever garbage or brush or whatever wafts through the valley, meaning the particulate material on the air quality index is only "good" at times, not excellent. No sulphur dioxide or nitrogen oxide levels though. That's a great thing.

Thanks man, yeah it's a tough decision.

The ad says the school and apartment are 5 minutes walk to the beach. I'm just wondering what part of Pohang it's in. From what I've read:

Buk-gu (North part of Pohang): Nice, commercial and residential.

Nam-gu (South part of Pohang): POSCO Steel, Airport, Industry.

Obviously, Buk-gu is the place you want to live/work.

But yeah, I might have to look at a nice little town on the coast, without all the industry. Thanks again man, I appreciate the help.

Ask 'em. I don't think Pohang is that bad. Also, judging by what I've seen in Pohang, you will probably be living and working in the posh part of the city. There's not much down near the steel plant. And that is one HUGE steel mill, boy.

I passed on Pohang, just didn't feel right for me. It sounds like a cool city, but I've been in Korea long enough that I know what I want. I'm gonna look at smaller communities, outside of the major cities. Thanks for the opinions guys.

Anytime, Man of Beer. It's good to see someone come here who knows what he does and does not want.
