The economy may be developed, but I don't classify a country as developed until I stop smelling the raw sewage on every corner.

Oh no!

Koreans like being #1 among developing countries in various indices; as a developed country they'll rank 8th, 12th and lower in all sorts of areas

Yesterday, the FTSE announced it will grant developed status to South Korea. The designation will become active September 2009.

It'll be a while yet and there is still room (about a year or so) for the country to shoot itself in the foot.

Korea does have an economy that is advanced, the country is one of the wealthiest when it comes to GDP, income per capita, but I am not sure I would label it as an investment friendly environment. How would FDI invest the corporate political culture? What is the experience of the investors already here? They have different needs than us, I am sure.
Are they affected by the banking practices. I don't think so since they have their own bank accounts at home.

Let's not forget the enormous, enormous amount of prostitution in this country.

I keep on meeting women who seem normal. Then I later find out that they are ex, or current prostitutes. I'm not totally anti-prostitution, but it's a little too much. It is SOOOOOOOO widespread around here. It seems almost like its socially acceptable and considered no big deal to do it.

This is just one reason why I am just about DONE dating Korean women.

Not so fast. They're still out there today on a Sunday building the streets, buildings, new utility poles, and other infrastructure. Some old rich retires are commissioning for this neighborhood to be redeveloped as it was a neglected remnant of the old coal mining days of which the mines shut down 20 years ago. Yes, there is construction going on all around me in my area 7 days a week and it's going to look really nice when they get it done as they're using many blocks of granite and employing the latest construction techniques. These pieces of construction equipment are outside from 6 or 7 to 6 every day making a car honk sound every 20 seconds as a safety precaution for pedestrians to keep a distance as we have to walk in construction zones due to there being no place else to walk in getting places. A safety officers is always blowing his whistle too. I ready for it to be finished.

I would consider Korea to be quite developed and wealthy, but lacking much of what is a 1st world country. You got very modern 1st world elements sitting in a 3rd worldish quality of environment.

How is that happening to where it's so common? You must be meeting them in a place where prostitutes like to frequent no? Nightclubs maybe.

And these women spilled the beans that easy?!

Republic Of Prostitution
Chosun Ilbo (February 7, 2003)
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200302/200302060032.html
Quote:
The Korean Institute of Criminology released figures on Thursday stating that prostitution is a W24 trillion business in Korea, accounting for 4.1% of the country's GDP. The figures serve as a warning as to how prostitution is no longer something that can be seen as an individual's moral corruption. All the while it was discussed only in whispers and we pretended it was barely there, this monster of a business has grown larger than electricity, gas, and water (2.9%), and to be as big as agriculture, forestry, and fishery (4.4%).

The number of prostitutes dropped by 18 percent to 269,000 during the same period. The sex trade involved some 94 million transactions in Korea last year, down from 170 million in 2002.

The amount of money traded for prostitution was over 14 trillion won, much less than 24 trillion won in 2002. About 21.4 percent of the transactions were made in businesses claiming to be bars, karaoke clubs, massage parlors, barber shops or other businesses....

Actually I found out that two of the ex teachers at my school are involved in prostitution.

One of them is an all out prostitute. She got fired from my hagwon and is now doing a little prostitution again to pay the bills as she is working on her masters degree too. The other one told me that she did it "a long time ago", but I really get the feeling that she still does it for easy money.

They admitted it to me very easily after I hung out with them outside of school a few times. I was asking some very pointed questions and verbally backed them into a corner and they admitted it. Both times they were drunk when they told me though, the truth serum always works. And the way they admitted it makes me think that they feel it isn't too big of a deal. It's like they think it's something they do that's a bit naughty, but not too bad.

Another one was a woman I met at Starbucks. She never admitted to me that shes a prostitute. But she says and does things that make it extremely obvious to connect the dots. I almost never meet women in nightclubs, I always meet them in very normal places and situations.

There is something about me for sure that attracts this type of woman. I always have attracted the nutty, crazy, psycho chicks that turn out to be big trouble. I don't know why.

I think that most attractive young women do it here. After all it is very, very quick and easy money. All you have to do is walk down the street and you can see that apple pie is for sale in soooooooooooo many places. I can see a place like that from the view out of my patio.....

From now on i'm only gonna get fat women to avoid this problem. More cushion for the pushin and less chance that they used to be a ho.

Prostitution in Korea
http://cityglance.org/asia/korea/prostitution.shtml
Quote:
Prostitution in Korea takes on several faces including the massage parlours, barber shops, bars, brothels, room salons, juicy bars, turkish baths, strip clubs, etc, spread throughout the country. The job is moderately lucrative. According to a recent poll, 80% of women working in the entertainment industry in korea make between 3 and 5 million wons per month net income (3180$US - 5300$US per month), 7% make in excess of 5 million wons, and 13% make less than 3 million wons. The average salary of prostitutes is comparable to the one of korean engineers with 10+ year seniority or professors at public universities....
