Late.
Finally saw this film.
I'm a Canadian, and I cannot fathom the America that Americans must live in.
Seeing those 911 workers get health care from Cubans that was unavailable Stateside was beyond appalling.
Seriously, seeing how the French live pissed me off significantly as a Canadian. I know first hand the horror of paying of student loans, and getting our 2 weeks vacation a year, but only if your full-time.
So I can imagine that the Yanks watching must have wanted to vomit through the entire movie.
I especially found it interesting how he pointed out the numerous "socialized" institutions in America, such as police, firefighters, schools, post office.
Oh well, guess having your mail delivered is more important than having your cancer treated.
Holy crap, how can a movie about Americans suffering make me this pissed off?
Must be like what the Canadian in me, who sees health care as a fundamental right for all, American or Canadian.
Seriously, what a fucking joke. |

There was a thread months ago on Sicko.
Yes, this movie does not present all the facts. The US postal is not really a social system, it is a commercial for profit entity. www.usps.com
As you know, Canadians have it difficult too with obtaining adequate employment and health care.
And European countries social systems are not a bed of roses for young adults as they might had been for older people, except the Nordic countries are said to have the highest standard of living in the world.
Regardless of which country you hail from, it really boils down to how much money you as an individual is worth and the quality of your insurances to protect your finances should you be inconvenienced with unforeseen circumstances like health problems. |

Not strictly true. Although this anecdote is dated, I can tell you that as a young twenty something who broke his leg, was helicoptered to the city, took an ambulance to the hospital, had an operation, hospital stay and physiotherapy.... the only thing I paid for was the ambulance.
I had no private insurance, just the Australian medicare card, and no means to pay later on. Worked really well for me. |

And the postal service is not a "for profit" entity. It is more akin to non-profits in the social service sector. They make enough money to pay their staff, including wage increases, and re-invest to maintain their infrastructure. Even that is being done less and less as the amount they are allowed to charge is regulated by a board of advisors in the federal government. They just don't have enough money, "for profits" don't have that problem generally. |

Honestly gopher, if you don't get it, either you are from a very rich family, or you must not give a shit about your fellow man.
I'm not interested in debating the finer points. There is only one fine point to be made, and that is you should never have to choose which finger. |

From what I know of him, it's more likely that he's just a *beep*. |

That you and filmmakers such as Moore sincerely feel such sentiments, I have no doubt.
Simplistic dichotomies and value-laden and antagonistic discourses -- not to mention sensationalist and exaggerated ones -- on problem A, B, or C do not tend to prove helpful. One can explain without condemning; one can talk without so many dramatic, clich qualifiers (e.g., "I cannot fathom"; "beyond appalling"; "the horror of...") cluttering up his or her message; and one can offer constructive criticism meant to understand and then ameliorate problems rather than denounce, discredit, and then divide people into mutually-hostile camps. But you and your friends here are not really interested in that, are you?
In any case, what you do here is add additional propagandistic jingoism to further manipulate the rabble.
As I said, congratulations.

And as I already said, congratulations. |
while you try to use big words to make a simple choice sound complex.
it's because of people like you that those 9/11 workers had to go to Cuba to buy a 3.5 peso inhaler.
do you not understand, this is simply a matter of big corporations making big profits? |
