Yes, even that would be fine. One step at a time.... Just having my Korean 7-year-itch meltdown, I guess. Didn't want to take it out on the students, so I'm venting in the friendly waters of Dave's ESL. |

Yeah, our office door is always left open by every other person. It's occasionally closed, but generally open.
The classroom across the hall's door is habitually open too. That means some of my students can look across and see me "working" (reading Dave's) on my laptop. It's often because I have no classes this week, or next.
So I sit there and eat chocolates I was originally going to use for their class then stick my tongue out every once and awhile. Mwahaha. |

I've got this one nearly cracked........
If a student comes in without closing the door they have to answer whether or not they are an animal. After I tell them that only animals can't close doors they will quickly close the door.
Now nearly all my students will close the door, and if not I only have to look at them to send them running to close it.
A very simple tactic but every effective |

this doesn't have anything to do with school but when i saw the title i thought it was speaking to me. in my apt building, my apt is at the end of the hall. the the guy apt on the right side right before you get to my apt ALWAYS LEAVES HIS FRACKING DOOR WIDE OPEN ALL THE TIME. its irritating cuz i feel like i'm suddenly intruding into this guys apt since the door takes up the whole freaking hallway. does he do this for air circulation or what? i cant even tell if he's in there most of the time. anyone understand why he would do this? its only blocking my apt of course. maybe he hates whitey. or just likes his door open *sigh* |

bugs the hell outta me too... the other native speakers and i often throw down bets to see how long until the teachers' room door will be left open... the record as of now is 3mins, 45secs... i've won tons of money from the other teachers because i usually bet for 2mins or less... i guess they have more faith in our koworkers...
i attribute it to the fact that i have a small fan on my desk, and the teacher room has no windows to leave open for protection, so they opt for the door |

I'm still trying to figure out why I'm constantly preached at by coworkers not to press the 'door open' button in elevators; or that one air conditioner uses the same power as 40 fans, or that i should do more recycling in the office.
Yet, these same people walk in the building on a hot, humid summer day and leave both main doors WIDE OPEN to let the cool air escape!
Way to go team. |

We had the same problem in our building here at the university. It has swinging glass doors and people would come and go and the doors would be left wide open no matter what the weather was outside. We would put signs on the door (Korean and English), admonish students, etc., but to no avail. Finally, we had mechanisms put in two of the doors that keep them from staying open. We locked the other doors and put signs on them to use the unlocked ones.
So, how has it worked? Well, for the most part, but with some glitches. First, some people seemed to be uncomfortable that the doors didn't stay open on their own, so they put wedges under them to hold them open (I've had to remove several). Some others unlocked the doors that didn't have the mechanism (I relocked them on several occasions). Still, as most became used to the new mechanisms (they've been on for about a year now), they have put up with them. |
