My Visa expires this Friday, September 12th.

I know the old rule was you had 2 weeks to leave after you finished your job.

I have heard rumors that now you have to be out of the country the day it expires, or you get fined.

Does anyone know the most up to date rules?

And sorry if this has been asked, the search on this site never works.

There has NEVER been a 2 week grace period at the end of a visa.
It USED to be that you had 2 weeks to leave if you quit early (this has also changed).

At the end of your visa you have 3 options:

a) Leave the country by midnight on the last date indicated on your ARC.

b) Get an extension. If you need a NON-working extension it is free. Simply take your passport, ARC, and airticket down to the immigration office, fill in the application form. They will extend you until the time of your departure (up to 30 days).
(extensions to continue work require additional paperwork and a fee of 30k won).

c) Overstay your visa.
You WILL be delayed at the airport when you try to leave.
You WILL be questioned.
You WILL be fined 100k. You will NOT be allowed to leave until it is paid.
You WILL have a blackmark in your immigration file that WILL complicate returning to Korea on another work visa.

My school is letting me go early around Sept 30. My ARC states Oct 24 so can I stay in korea until then? Might give me time to travel around korea a bit. Smile

You are good as gold AS LONG AS they don't cancel their sponsorship (perhaps to get a new teacher).

IF they do report your end of employment to immigration (even if you are not aware of it) you only have 14 days to report your end of employment to immigration (and get your 30 day exit order).

Does that mean I have to go into immigration every 3 or 4 days to see if sponsorship has been canceled? Can I do it myself? Then I have 30 days to exit if i do it myself? Question

It means you're better off going down there with them on your last day and getting the visa cancelled. One of two things will happen:
  1. They'll give you an exit order for 30 days hence, which will actually give you a few extra days;
  2. They'll give you an exit order for the original date on your ARC.
Either way, you won't have to wonder what your actual status is.

It never ceases to amaze me how people can leave such important details till the very last minute or even AFTER it's too late.

ALWAYS have your visa's sorted WELL in advance.

This isn't a very complicted thing, yet we complain alot when the locals do it, but when we do something very foolish ourselves, we simply shrug and seek solace on this board. Is it that difficult to do? The immi phone number is on your ARC. There's no excuse for this type of thing.

If you overstayed your visa, prepare to give up some of your savings to pay for your 'mistake that everyone makes' and you'll need to do an interview next time.

I went to Immigration and they gave me an extra 2 days when I showed them my plane ticket, so it's all sorted. I was just confused I guess because I quit a job before and knew I had 2 weeks to leave then. I didn't realize it was different from finishing. But thanks for the helpful advice.

And I am sooooo freaking excited to leave. I have been here 3 years and it is time for a change. Smile

Be careful, folks and follow ttompatz's advice. My coworker has just had to return to his home country for an interview after having overstayed his previous visa and getting fined.

He spent the summer back home, and has had to turn around and go right back again at his own expense.

Do yourself a favor and visit the Immigration office if it looks like you're going to have to stay longer than the final date on your visa.

As much as I trust ttompatz's advice, who always seems to be right, can anyone double confirm that the fine is a flat 100k and not a per-day rate.

I'm leaving tomorrow, I think I'm good as my visa and ARC don't actually expire until Feb. 2009. I left my school early and, although they tell me they didn't cancel my visa yet, I don't trust the swines. They were devious when I worked for them, so I'm worried about getting a nasty surprise when I go through immigration at Incheon tomorrow.

Yes, I should have checked with immigration myself. I'm a fool, but can anyone confirm the 100k flat fine?
