SUBWAYSTRIKE
09-19-2008 22:16
Seoul Metro to Strike Next Friday
By Bae Ji-sook
Staff Reporter
Union members of Seoul Metro decided Friday to go on strike from Sept. 26 to protest a management plan to layoff 20 percent of its workers.
The decision comes after nine months of negotiations between the operator of subway lines 1 to 4 and its employees failed to narrow their differences on the layoff plan. Additionally, the company has started to outsource workers for three of its lost-and-found bureaus as part of a streamlining project, which has infuriated unionists.
The union said that among 9,306 members, 8,398 showed up to vote and 74 percent agreed on the walkout.
However, management said the strike will not cause any huge inconvenience as it has already made preparations by outsourcing temporary workers, adding that it is technically illegal for the unionists to go on a full-scale strike under current laws.
By law, unionists should maintain operations at 100 percent during commuting hours; 65.7 percent on weekdays; and 50 percent on holidays during a strike as their work is related to the public interest.
Management also said it would take strong measures if the union insists on illegal collective action.
[We are going to have to talk about taking buses, because there is no way I am just going to take home, because the president wants to infuriate those fellows with massive cuts.] |

That's a lie. They're way better here.
The restaurants are cleaner, they actually care about presentation and they don't stinch on the veggies. I've been to many Subways in my life and the best have been in Korea because you don't have to deal with some druggie tool throwing lettuce in the direction of your sub.
As an added bonus, the lady who works at the local Subway here is cute. |

Ummm...personal tastes ARENT LIES! Take a poll on here if you like. Dont know what Subway youre eating here, but they suck a@@ compared to most back home. Rubbery meat, crappy bread and ONLY one kind of cheese
Also, some "cute and dumb" part-time university worker, who has no idea what a good sandwich tastes like, wouldnt be a reason why I would visit a Subway. |

anyone who believes that subways back home are good clearly grew up in an area where there was no such thing as a real deli. that means you don't have to cope with the pain of missing said delis either. rubbery meat and crappy bread are par for the course at any subway. i eat it here because sometimes i just need a sandwich and don't want to haul my lazy ass all the way to pita time in itaewon. subway sucks, but i'm damn glad they're all over seoul.
the actual subway strike is gonna suck too. |

Well, where Im from in Canada, the Subway tastes a LOT better than here. Not saying its the best either. Just a lot less crappier than the ones in Seoul
And they arent ALL OVER Seoul. Looking on their site, maybe about 10. Didnt count |

Please back on topic. Is the subway going to be running limited trains on Friday, then? |

They might cut down on the number of trains, but not by much, I'm guessing. The last time they had a subway strike, I barely noticed it. Maybe I had to wait another minute or two between trains -- hard to tell.
They now have enough experienced outsourced workers that it doesn't matter a lot (guessing). That's what I seemed to get from that article, anyway. |

back on topic---
Are you people trying to tell me that the Subway Sandwiches here taste different than the ones back home? I respectfully disagree, sirs. I don't taste any difference whatsoever. Although I will concede that the subway employees here are far less likely to be high as a kite and slightly--- but only slightly-- more likely to be drunk as a skunk. |

i do recall both lines at dongdaemun being done around 10:00pm on a sunday during the strike back in 2006. it was pretty ridiculous. beyond that, i never ride line 4 outside of peak travel times, so i'm always overwhelmed by the crowds.
as for subway sandwiches and their locations around seoul, 4 within 25 minutes of my place in seongbuk-gu must mean i live in some sort of a subway mecca. |
