And how were your travels?

We will be making our first SE Asia trip pretty soon and would like any info you have. For all you veterans out there, how do you recommend getting around?

Specifically,

from Phuket to Angkor Wat?

Also, how do you prefer to travel
from Angkor Wat to Chang Mai?
Chang Mai to Bangkok?
from Bangkok to Phuket?

Are busses bearable? Are there any cheap airlines? How did you do it?

Air Asia is an easy option. You fly from Phuket to Bangkok and then Pnom Phen and then to Siem Reap. Cost: About $150 to $200. Just visit a travel agent or buy off the Air Asia site. I flew from Siem Reap to Pnom Phen to Bangkok and then to Phuket to save about 35 hours. Flying in and out of Cambodia seems to be the most practical way to go as my border crossing at Poipet was quite weird, scary, and a big hassle to secure transportation to Siem Reap.

Most people take buses and trains, but you can fly to save time. Buses and trains can take 12 hours from Phuket to Bangkok and then another 12 hours from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and another 12 hours to get to Siem Reap so it's beneficial to fly if you have money, but it takes away from the adventure. Bangkok is the central transportation hub where if you want to get to another part of the country, you have to go to Bangkok first.

Great info, thanks.

What travel agent do you recommend? Would you go through a travel agent here in Seoul or one in Thailand?

Angkor Wat to Chiang Mai is easy enough. Without having specific knowledge of Thailand, I wouldn't stray off the beaten path via Issan. I would probably fly from Phnom Penh to Bangkok and then up to Chiang Mai with Air Asia. From there, you can fly with Bangkok Airways to Phuket. Then, Air Asia back to Bangkok to catch your flight out.

You can book all of this on the respective websites of the carriers.

watch out for shady travel agents in thailand. last year i wanted to fly from chiang mai to luang prabang and the agent wanted me to mail my passport to bangkok to get an entry visa. "don't worry", she said, "nothing will happen". yeah right. (almost) every international airport can process visas. don't let ANYONE take your passport out of your sight.

Unless you happen to be going to Vietnam or a country where you actually need a visa before going.

really? you can't get a visa on arrival in vietnam? i'll have to remember that. in that case, i recommend getting a visa before you leave korea. although the trustworthiness of korean immi isn't too high IMO, at least you have an alien card for ID in korea if something happens to your passport.

I'd avoid the buses for long distance travel. Some have bathrooms on board. Others do not. If you've never visited Thailand before, going on a long bus ride may be risky, as you never know when you'll be struck with Bangkok belly. Imagine being stuck for 10-12 hours on a toilet-less bus while suffering from the squirts. Nice. Be sure to take the proper medicine no matter which mode you use. A roll of toilet paper and a bottle of sanitizer will come in handy as well.

Take the train or (better) take an Air Asia flight to these places.

I went Bangkok to Phuket and stayed on Phuket 2 nights. The rest of the week was spent on islands and much better than Phuket. I did rent a motorcycle on Phuket, that was the best part.

Phuket is an island. In fact, it is the largest island in Thailand.
