I have internet and a screen/speakers in my classroom; i.e., I can show youtube clips and pretty much anything on the net to my classes. I showed the Colbert/Rain segment and my uni students loved it.

I thought I might show a series of short, entertaining clips from movies/TV illustrating every English accent: the various N. American accents, an English accent , Scottish, Irish, Austratian, etc.

An example might be a Joe Pesci clip in Good Fellas to illustrate the New York accent.

Yes, it's kind of an excuse to take 30 minutes off, but I think it would be fun, and further would illustrate the fact that English is an international language spoken in diverse cultural contexts. I might even throw in a clip with Apu.

Anyway, if you have any favorite youtube clips that illustrate one of the English accents I'd apperciate it.

This isn't a movie clip, but a sight for phonetics sounds:

Play this accent game....

Try this youtube video. Amy Walker makes a good attempt at covering accents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UgpfSp2t6k

Try the several accent archives. Inventories of the world accents - people read the same selection from everywhere in the world. This is one of them http://accent.gmu.edu/browse_language.php

Also, see our audio+ page on EFL Classroom. A nice scroll through of major accents. (best to use IE browser). http://eflclassroom.ning.com/Wpage/page/show?id=826870%3APage%3A65381

I like the U of Iowa application but it is for phonetics and pronunciation and not really accents. But I have a nice full screen version of the same on EFL Classroom 2.0. Really great for showing students all the sounds and articulations...

Cheers,

DD
