Quote:
In an election campaign notable for its surprises, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate, may be about to spring a new one the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fianc before the November 4 election.

Inside John McCains campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. It would be fantastic, said a McCain insider. You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.

There is already some urgency to the wedding as Bristol, who is six months pregnant, may not want to walk down the aisle too close to her date of delivery. She turns 18 on October 18, a respectable age for a bride and the same age as Barack Obamas pregnant mother when she married his Kenyan father. The Democrat has already declared Bristols private life off-limits as far as his campaign is concerned.

Nahhhhhhh.... I thought her family was not to be dragged into this.

Well we've already had the precedent of a "shotgun" election (elect me or else the world will ruined and terrorists will crawl out from every hole and your baby won't be safe!). So I don't see this being beyond the pale......

Seems the elite lobby/business interest in America wants it that way. A quick marriage, illusion of a future and then BAAM! you can't get out. Americans continually pregnant, barefoot and in their kitchen ......

Your rudimentary understanding of democracy not withstanding...

Please continue to display your ignorance of the US constitution here.

Maybe the Palin family feels differently, but I hope they allow those two young people to get married in a quiet, dignified ceremony away from the media circus.

I wonder, will the bride wear white?

You can't broadcast the wedding of your pregnant teenage daughter and still demand that family sins be out of bounds.

It is unethical to exploit your children's lives for political benefit. A child over the age of 21 is a slightly different matter, but there are still limits.

Here is an article by John Eisenhower on the issue of sons of a president or candidate serving in combat:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/opinion/28eisenhower.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=eisenhower&st=cse&oref=slogin

It would be grossly irresponsible for a president or veep to allow a child to serve in a war zone these days, for the reasons stated in the article.

But that didn't stop Palin from turning her son's deployment to Iraq into a major media event.

They might as well have advertised to the world: Hey terrorists, come and get him!

Some people will do anything for power, even exploit their children's lives.

I'd be interested to know when Levi gets his GED. I wonder if the Steelworkers take apprentices without one?

All this is, is "...a group of adults manipulating a couple of children for their own ends."

This shotgun wedding is a sacrifice at altar of power

Manipulation and sacrifice for the biggest (political) gamble of all time. A 50-50 shot that a McCain/Palin win will set them all up for life... or sink them all back into instant obscurity.

Sounds like risky business to me.

I hope Vegas will have an over/under on how long the marriage will last. I typically don't gamble, but I'd play that bet.

The McCain camp is likely hoping that the national media will descend upon Alaska and use the wedding as an opportunity to get into another round of hillbilly-bashing, thus alienating white working class and rural voters.

But it won't work. At this point, peoples' opinions on Sarah Palin are set in stone. You either think she is the greatest thing since Cheez Whiz, or you think she's a dangerously incompetent moron. No one is going to change their mind as a result of watching a wedding on TV.

We could always start our own pool. I'll take 6 months. What is the buy in amount?

So please, answer the question! A rhetorical question suggests the poser knows the answer.... Could it be that there is much to bitch about? But I'll respectfully await your own all knowingness....

From elsewhere but stating the same thing as myself but only from an American slant....

Quote:
The truly disgusting thing about Sarah Palin isnt that shes totally unqualified, or a religious zealot, or married to a secessionist, or unable to educate her own daughter about sex, or a fake conservative who raised taxes and porked up earmark millions every chance she got. No, the most disgusting thing about her is what she says about us: That you can ram us in the ass for eight solid years, and well not only thank you for your trouble, well sign you up for eight more years, if only you promise to stroke us in the right spot for few hours around election time.
