I want to show this vid next week at end of class , as a tie in to what I am teaching (weather)

(so please take comments about not teaching and showing vids and stick them up your rectums)

anyways.. I have one co teacher who is a "Christian", (excuse me while I uncork a korean style loogie in response to this)

and I'm a little worried about her.

I've watched the vid and it's a little racy, but not overly so.. and in line with most Korean vids.. Wonder Girls are only slightly less racy and I saw a vid at doc's office last week that was as racy if not more so (can't remember the Korean girl's name.. she was smoking hot/sexy in that way most Korean women are not, aren't "supposed to be",, the song was just god-awful)

anyways... how "inappropriate"?

these are highschoolers, I'm SURE they have already seen worse (and there were no complaints about Wonder girls shaking their asses)

I wouldn't show it. Look for a live performance and show that instead. Maybe they have seen worse but I doubt they have seen worse in front of adults.

I recall someone saying this: If you ask to ask if it's inappropriate, then it probably is!

A suggestion: Use Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and tie that in with the seasons.

Play 15 seconds of the video only then stop it. Tell them it's a big hit pop song by her, Rihanna, but that the music video is too sexy to show in class. Tell them it has to do with weather but don't say how.

Then show 30 seconds to a minute (through the chorus at least once) of the Mandy Moore video version, telling the students beforehand that the song is so big a hit that many others have played it. Tell them Mandy Moore slows down the song and does a more folk and country playing of the song. Again, stop it after the first chorus. By then the students have heard the chorus twice at least. Ask them what the song is about. Ask them beforehand to listen for what is said about weather.

THEN... play the whole 4 minutes plus of Lillasyster's version and tell the students beforehand it is a hard rock kind of playing of the pop hit song, and that they are to listen for what is said about the weather. Hve them guess the name of the song too. The video is ENTIRELY appropriate! as the video progresses it starts to rain harder and harder. One of the band members has no shirt on but it's a man and he's in the back, not done sexy like and they'll think it gross anyways. The video is "ROCK"! a format Koreans don't get much of. It's not rap, it's not pop, it's not folk.

Seriously, watch the whole Lillasyster video. It gets better and better. Crank the volume. It's incredible.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PeEaNzg4os

I only ask because it's "Korea".

in the US it wouldn't really be an issue, since that video is shown all the time (or similar videos)

but what FLOORS me (although I've had very limited exposure to Korean tv/videos, etc) is like I said.. I was waiting in doctor's office last week.. and tv was showing Korean vidoes..
and there was at least ONE that was every bit as racy, if not more so, than Umbrella.

one reason I wanted to show Umbrella is that it's "cultural". it is by far the monster HIT of the year.

hey.I kinda like the lillasyster version too Smile wasn't aware of it!
btw..as an aside. why is it that a fat guy with his shirt off isn't as "offensive" or "inappropriate" as a hot chick showing some leg or cleavage?

seeing alternate versions, I'm beginning to think Koreans will like the Vanilla Sky version the best! Very Happy
the guy in the pink dress will start a new fashion trend.. after all, they're already more than halfway there! hahaha

p.s. Mandy Moore? hahahahaha... I wouldn't have believed you if you told me she was a "singer". God, does that "version" SUCK!!!!!!!!

Oh c'mon, her video is much more than just that. SUGGESTIVE DANCING ... and... NUDE BODIES (midway thr the vid) versus a shirtless fat guy in the background playing the guitar.

Seriously, the Lillasyter, played LOUD, is appropriate. The song has lyrics about raining (and the video pours like crazy at the 3 minute mark) and about the lights of cars and the dark, both also in the vid.

Go ROCK!

That would be just silly! Me startin' ta think you just want to be a rebelrouser. Wink

(Go ROCK!)

Seriously, turn up the volume higher (*beep* the neighbours) and listen again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PeEaNzg4os

Rock your classroom! Sure, the classroom nearby might complain, but by then the song will be over and you can apologize for the noise and say "But it is ROCK music. It had to be played loud." Razz

I think the "nude bodies" are covered up in a gold like plaster.. so they're not really "nude"...

call it "art" hehe

hey.. as far as rock played LOUD.. you're preaching to the choir dude. Smile

that said.. I also believe in giving the ORIGINAL artist due credit.

I DO like the lillyaster version.. (but my pop loving Korean students will probably much prefer Rihanna's)

maybe I'll let my "Christian co teacher (hork a loogie) look at it have her decide..

I think I already know the answer..

in which case.. I'll say... Ms. "Kim" said I couldn't show it.. (in which case they'll all see it by themselves later hahaha)

I thought of a great way to "tweak" Korean "pop culture".

I have a pic of their 'star' "Rain" dressed in pink.

I'm going to say.. THAT is not "rain".

and men don't wear pink Smile

Why not have them LISTEN to the Rihanna version first (and show a picture of the artist). Then ask questions. Then where some answers are lacking, have them listen again, but this second time show a video, the Lillasyster version. Then ask them afterwards. When all is done, ask a last question: POP or ROCK, which did they like more?

Anyways, good luck whatever. G'night.

I may show both versions.. or do something along the lines of your suggestions.. we shall see.

I DO thank you for your input. thanks!

p.s. my students are the lowest level. so not much opportunity for creativity about what they know/don't know.

They know NOTHING outside of "hello.. nice to meet you too" and "bye".

oh yes.. they also know "candy".

Lots of good advice but will correct the above. This WOULD be a big issue in the US if you ever showed this in class. Hypocritical or whatever. It would be. Just think of COPPA, the latest boogie man. Man O man, even in the schools of America, fear rules.....

maybe it would.. I don't know.. probably it'd depend on the location/school, etc.

but talk about HYPOCRISY!!

that said.. I do think Rihanna's "Shut up and drive" would be entirely INappropriate almost anywhere.. she practically bends up and over the entire vid wearing shorty short shorts. Umbrella is far far tamer.

I may wind up showing a live version (from MTV awards show) though I found a vid with lyrics embedded, which obviously won't be available with a live version/performance.

Looks fine to me,

Like you said it's about par with wondergirls "racy", only slighty more so. In fact I think wondergirls is a little more...

I would just check with the co-teacher on it. And it ties in perfectly with what you're teaching.

Just do up the lyrics on a word doc or PPT (maybe with some pics) and play the vid on a hidden window. It's not the most visually exciting way to do it, but oh well. Or link to another more modest youtube vid of her and turn the volume down of the modest vid and play the other one over it.

Why get all horny about playing that video? Just find another one or none at all for that matter. The fact that she says "umbrella" isn't really going to teach anything about weather. I think they might already know what an umbrella is for and what rain is.

Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh! Brain fart.

your students are higher level than mine Smile

mine know hello, bye, nice to meet you too and candy.

If I had to bet maybe 10% know "sun" or "rain".

anyways.. you're right it's not about THAT video (which is why I am leaning to showing performance/live vid instead)

but I ALSO happen to think there is a "cultural" component to it.

like I said.. it's easily the biggest North American music hit of the year (with some room for argument, I suppose)

btw in the chorus she sings "it's raining" hehe

Anyway, she's a crappy singer. Sounds worse than a cat in heat. That's if you can even hear her (live). Can't dance either.

In other words, she a ho.
