hey, my ARC expires on october 7th so i figured i should be flying out of the country on that day. however, i looked at my contract and it says the 1 year starts on my first working day, which was october 8th. soooo....my first question is, do I have to contact immigration to get my visa and ARC extended by the 1 extra day??

second, tax.....ive read a bit here recently about people saying the 3.33% isnt right and we should be paying less. just wondering what experience people have had with regards taking this up with their director? because over the year, it all adds up and if what she's doing is wrong, i would quite like to get the cash back!!

help is appreciated!! thanks

If I was you, I would get an extension on my visa of a week. It will probably be free and they will write the extension on the back of your arc or place a stamp with the info in your passport.

It shouldn't take too long and it will allow you more freedom of time. Make sure that you can stay long enough to get all your pay sorted out.

Others will have more detailed info, but thats just my plan. My visa actually ends 2 weeks before the end of the contract so I have to get an extension of 30 days.

If your first working day was october 8th, then your final working day will be october 7th. It might be possible to get a late nite flight out, but otherwise just get an extension.

Regarding tax. You've been taxed as an independent contractor. It's not right, but there's little you can do about it, just one of those ways hagwon bosses like to screw you. More importantly, have you been paying pension, and are you eligible to recieve the pension when you leave? (i.e. from US/Can) If the answers are "no" and "yes" i'd rectify that ASAP, as it that could amount to a cool 1mill+ in your pocket.

Don't get an extension for only a day. You may need extra time to tie up loose ends. An extension of about 5 business days should suffice. But this ultimately depends on when you're flying out. A longer wait may get you a cheaper ticket, but a longer extension, of course.

i dont really care how much the ticket is cos theyre paying for it!! i dont have any loose ends to tie up here.....if i get my money a couple of days before i leave thats everything sorted.

she spoke to me today about flights....i figured my ARC is up on 7th so i should be flying out on 7th. now she's now sayin that i wont fly out til 9th. my first working day was 8th when i sat in on classes to see what happened etc. she's now tryin to tell me that this doesnt count as a working day. so my first "working" day was 9th, last working day will be 8th then leave 9th. fuckin raging. why do koreans do this??? we got on really well the whole time i was here, korean staff are all really nice, i brought my friend from home to work in the school, they wanted me to stay on....and now they do this shit. its really fryin my head....thank god for soju to make me feel a bit better!!!

Don't forget that the 'extension' is only free if you are NOT gonna work any of it. If you are gonna work you need crim record checks (tho if you already did that maybe not).
And you CAN get the tax back. Pop into the local tax office and they will call the employer to remind them to include your tax adjustment/refund and include with final salary.

What is the date on your ARC? I am ending my job before my actual date on my ARC but immigration said I could stay until that date which gives me some time to visit some places. I dont think your first working day has anything to do with immigrations exit date on your ARC. Better to ask immigration when you are supposed to exit. Yes, you should be paying 1.7% in monthly income tax if you are making 2.0. I am getting 2 years worth of taxes my boss didnt pay to the tax office. He didnt want the big tax fine. Rolling Eyes

i thought they allowed about 2 weeks as a grace period for leaving the country. (sorry im not sure about this) what i am sure about is that last time i left (dec 2006), the date on my visa, the date on my ARC, and the date that was on my contract were all different. i left 2 days after all of the dates. korean immi didnt say anything. but, you might want to call your local immigration office to check out what the deal is.

There is NO grace period. You must leave the country before midnight of the date on your ARC. You can get a 'tourist' extension of up to 30 days (free) - you must show your ticket out of the country. You can also extend from 1 day to a year for the purpose of work (W30,000).
