I am interested in a Korean mountain bike. Any decent brands available? Are there any websites which review these products? I picked one brand at random, Infiza, and I couldn't find any product reviews.

I am not sure whether I want to fork out the extra bucks for something like a Kona or Marin.

I'd say pay the extra and get a decent bike. I haven't been shopping for a couple years, but you shouldn't have any trouble to get something pretty decent for around a million.

Cello is a high end Korean brand. They start at about a million, and go up to 4 or 5 million for a full carbon frame.

Below that is Blackcat. 500,000 to 1.5 million I guess.

Both of those brands are part of the same company that does Lespo, so you can just go to a Lespo bike shop and they will be able to show you the catalogue.

There is another korean company that does bikes, so maybe they do elfama?

Like you, I thought a Korean MTB would be a good souvenir, but I am way too tall. The largest frame you will get in Korea is 19inch, which would be ok for someone up to about 6' I guess. Plenty of mid-range bikes (~400,000) only come in one size, 17 inch.

you can get really good rates on scott bicycles here in korea. last week i purchased a '09 scott scale 40 hard tail xc mountain bike for around 1.75m won. in the states that bike go for nearly $2200.

other than scott none of the non-korean brands are gonna give you all that great of a deal, sure theres merida... but i just get a bad vibe from them.

you can also go the custom route. i'm currently talking with my lbs about getting a randonneuring bike made by a small custom frame building house called kayak. they specialize in keirin track frames but will do just about anything. my lbs imports all of their columbus tubing so if you buy through him (bob jo @ camel bikes in donong, namyangju-si) you can probably get a decent deal.

Sorry, from the title of your post I was imagining biking on a 'serious mountain'. A vision of riding on a beautiful mountain in NK while dodging bullets was in my head.

Would that be what they call extreme mountain biking?

actually i'm told there's great singletrack along the dmz. just have to keep an eye out for minefields.
