Any advice on getting a Pay As You Go phone in Korea? I don't know Korean. We want the cheapest phone possible - it could be a banana as long as I can make emergency calls.

I just got a pretty nice LG Cyon(SK Telecom) 40K. Show your passport and you are all done. 10K for 27 minutes.

Hit a few of the neighborhood phone shops.... look for a used phone. EVERY phone can be set up as a PAYG phone (card-uh pone). It doesn't matter which network (SK, KTF/show or LG) - they are all the same when it comes to prepaid phones.

If you are close to Yongsan station, across the tracks you will see a large blue building. behind that is the Nanjin arcade. In the basement there are tons of phone shops...

or the yongdongpo-gu market... or just bout any subway station has a phone shop or 10 close by.

30-50k won for a decent used phone.

Someone left a phone w/charger in the apartment we now live in - can I bring that phone to the shop and they set up the pay as you go on a phone I already have?

Would I still need a passport for that? I'm currently going through the No Passport Dance with my school right now (because I'm getting my ARC card).

Not too sure but I doubt it.

I lost my previous phone and when I went too buy a new one last weekend I was able to keep the same number as the old phone. The dude in the shop called someone/somewhere and matched my passport details with what they had on record.

Yes, you will need a passport at a minimum to get a card phone.

If you have your ARC and bankbook you can get a plan phone from LG.

although im not sure how you go about convincing a shop clerk to do that if they dont already have it.
