Lately, I've been coming around to the idea that arguing the merits of Iraq and other unilateral US intervention misses the point.
At this stage, with an 11 Trillion dollar debt, negative savings rate, etc... maybe the US really cannot afford 700 Billion + a year on military expenditures and to be going it alone everywhere. EVEN if US foreign policy is more realistic or responsible than say EU foreign policy, isn't it possible that the US has no choice but to work with the EU in the future.
Maybe the US needs to cut its military expenditures down the same percentage as other G8 countries and start paying off its debt. Then it can work as first among equals ith NATO/EU in international crises. Who knows, without the US being able to ride to the rescue, maybe EU countries will pony up more cash for their militaries and be more active.
What do you think? Regardless of the merits of the initiative, can the US afford to be the cowboy sherrif of the world anymore? |

100% agree. That is one of my biggest personal complaints against the war. |

Look on the bright side. At least you didn't go over there and come back with a missing limb, or worse, in a box. Having to pay higher taxes pales in comparison, it seems to me.

Yeah, quite a few other consequences. I do know people who have family members with those results.
I am also NOT looking forward to being back in the States and seeing 10s of 1000s of more homeless veterans with psychological problems all across the country...and the tons of Iraqis and Middle Easterner (allies) and (refugees) which will transform cities in the future.
My Detroit area has some of the largest Iraqi populations outside of Iraq now....Kurds the biggest population outside of Iraq/Turkey are in Nashville now, etc.
I just find it funny that all those pro-war people who want to 'kill them all' when it actually means they all come back to the States with the many damaged soldiers as well. The most pro-War Americans dont seem to realize the many other consequnces involved, let alone the immense amount of significantly more debt and financial and economic problems it cumulatively brings to our country. |
