What is this? An Obama gaffe? Did you confuse him with Palin? Or is he really talking about the 50 states plus the voters from other territories? |
Here's the gaffe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws
To be honest, I've always thought it was simply impossible for an American, and a highly educated American, to seriously believe there are any other than 50 states. So I always wondered what the explanation was for the gaffe. Tiredness? Mis-spoke? Anyway, I just saw this attempt at an explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-R158t0jhk |

No chance he just slipped and said 'fif' instead of 'for' is there? Doesn't seem like such a big deal unless someone is just looking for something to complain about. |

I've given many speeches before and being the nervous wreak that I used to be, can easily see how a slip like that can occur. It's not uncommon especially with numbers to be confused especially when dealing with something like states.
I remember one speech I said we had 52 states. Thinking, hey we have 50 states, quickly thinking oh god I forogot Alaska and Hawaii I ended up tacking them on.
It's not a lapse in judgement, memory, or knowledge. It's simply a slip of the tongue or communication. We could look at other speeches and writings, and if he also claimed that there are 57 states than yes, he is an idiot. But if he's said 50 states in previous campain speeches, and only slipped up this time, then obviously it's due to tiredness. |

i think sometimes people place a lot more importance on a someone slipping up a word. yeah Obama sounds dumb saying that. McCain sounded creepy when he said "my fellow prisoners" at one of his rallies. Biden is a gold mine when it comes to random things to say. Although, in his case I don't know if he thinks before he speaks. then later he's like oh yeah i guess that is kind of weird to say. and Palin is just plain dumb. even if you like on over the other, i feel like people should take a step back before going "omg i cant believe obama is so dumb he doesnt' know how many states there are!" can people truly believe the man has made it this far believing that? its not so hard to go OK he misspoke. i mean, i don't think McCain really thought he was surrounded by prisoners, he didn't even notice he said it he just kept talking. I'm willing to chalk things like this up to simple mistakes and not crucify one or the other. except for Palin. she just doesn't know anything. cant even name one newspaper you read? please.
i'm not trying to preach anything i just think people should lighten up sometimes |

Come on OP!
If you've seen Obama speak enough times you would know that this was simply a slip of the tongue.
Just listen to Obama speak for five minutes and you'd know he was an educated man. |

I think maybe he was joking. Notice comedic pause. |

I don't know. I think I meant to write 'He's consistant' and felt something was missing. *shrugs* |

The old 57 states comment rises again. There was a debate over if Obama really meant the 57 Islamic states, but I doubt it. |
