I am at a public school which has a classroom for teaching English, a second area for practicing role playing, and what they call an auditorium (looks more like a presentation room). The room for practicing has several stations like a market, restaurant, bank, hospital, etc...

We are supposed to teach 3 hour sessions with a small break between each hour. I have written a few dialogues, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a book or other material which would make all the preparation less time consuming.

I think that the parts of the brain that are needed for holding a conversation don't get much exercise from role plays.

I feel that setting the students up to speak using words that they already know is better.

If you want your students to be able to hold a conversation stay away from too many role plays.

They create students that speak in a really fake way.

Well, considering the school has been funded and given role play stations, I doubt I can convince them otherwise. I agree, but, it's more a matter of filling up the 3 hours than teaching the "right thing". They need something to impress parents with.

This reminds of a conversation that got me out of music education. A teacher told me of all the pressures involved with keeping students and parents satisfied. If you teach the student to actually read music notation, it takes them longer to learn than providing some rote method where they could learn a piece quicker and therefore give parents reason to keep paying for them.

If the student is really motivated, they will have to go the extra mile and study beyond what the "herd" is doing.

Jadarite,

Why don't you try the role plays and dialogues I have on my site? Students can access them afterward and practice too. Or give them the task of bringing one to class to "perform"?

I spent a lot of time making these and think they are helpful. You can use the karaoke player to "slow' them down (it has a great tempo dial) or just use the videos on their own page.

Click Video Dialogues under WATCH on our Site Map http://eflclassroom.ning.com/directory.html

Cheers,
