Interesting, if not the most rigourous or comprehensive quiz:

What American accent do you have?
http://www.gotoquiz.com/what_american_accent_do_you_have

Despite being only 13 questions, it was accurate about me:

Quote:
"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I'm from Atlanta.

I would be interested in seeing how non-Americans, especially non-North American, score on the quiz.

Shocked
Northeast.

New York City, Connecticut, Rhode Island...

"Chances are, if you are from New York City people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak."

I'm an Australian who has spent a significant portion of my life in England.

Somehow I don't think this thing worked for me.....

The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta

Accurate enough, if Iowa is part of the West.

Actually, the only soCal accent is how we say the vowel sound "oo." Worked on that in voice lessons. Otherwise, we're nicely neutral. My quiz result was Midland/no accent.

That was, surprisingly, pretty accurate for me.

It correctly identified me as a Midland accent from the South.

I'm from a big city in Texas, and scored The Midland.

However, I've been back a few months and was dealing with my new bank manager who said,
"You have a heavy accent. Where are you from?"
He kind of freaked when I told him I grew up a couple of miles away.

I did pick up some European-isms in Korea. And I tend to speak slowly and enunciate, from dealing with Koreans.

I'm from Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada...

Interesting but strange...Waterloo county actually has its own identifiable Canadian accent, if you are over *cough* 40 *cough* that is. It's influenced by UE loyalists, Old Order Mennonites, and pre-world war one German immigration. A lot of lay people say it sounds slightly American, I've never understood that but I guess the test thinks so too.

Got me right - Inland North

"You may think you speak 'Standard English straight out of the dictionary' but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks 'pop'.

Grew up outside Rochester, NY and spent 11 years in Chicago. (But I don't have a real Chicago accent; I can hear those.) If they had asked about the word 'fog' they would have been able to pinpoint me as a Rochesterian.

I'm Midlands, which is true because I'm from Ohio. It's actually funny because many people think I'm Canadian for some reason.
