Hello all,

I'd like to know if there are still schools/recruiters offering short term (3- 6 month) contracts. All I am looking for is a decent salary, I would be willing to pay my airfare to Korea.

I am certified here in the states, but right now it is pretty bleak for teachers many places here in the states. In Florida, several of the largest school districts either have hiring freezes or have greatly reduced hiring. The vaunted "they'll always need teachers" rule no longer applies. Anyway, while I go through the process of adding another subject area endorsement (to broaden my options) I will definitely consider Korea.

Cheers for any help provided!

J

JG, I'm thinking of looking around for the same thing: maybe an initial 3-4 mth contract in Korea (then get a college or uni job from March 09).

Two suggestions re seeking short contracts in Korea:

i) write to recruiters telling them what you want (on an E-2 visa. Or a `camp` (C4, I think) visa); and,

ii) send along a comparison: Table A = what the the job(s) they're advertising pays per month (incldg salary, airfare, severance, & all other benefits) vs Table B = what you are asking for (eg. including salary (but not severance) and visa fees, etc) per month. It'd make it easier for the recruiter to quickly see what you would cost, and to sell your unusual request to employers. (And, obviously, I`d ask for no more per month under B than A would pay!).

Also, perhaps you want to look in to applying to teach overseas with DODS (or maybe its called DODDS or DODEA)...Dep`t of Defence Schools on US military bases, incluing in Korea. I gather that the packages can be very attractive (but I am not a US citizen, so I am not eligible to work for DODS; I checked a few years back). And I gather that they like, or require, at least two subject area endorsements.

Good luck!

There's plenty of teaching jobs available in Texas:

Yes there are still short term contracts available. I was just offered a job in a hagwon but turned it down because I already have a job. This guy does 3 month contracts and was offering 50,000 won an hour. But I dont know how many hours a day you would work. And the job is Monday-Thursday.

My friend is at an all girl's high school. Her contract is up in November, and they are begging her to stay, because her replacement isn't free until March!
So, if you've got your documents in order, maybe you can get a short term job at this high school.
They are really desperate. They are doing everything they can to get her to stay, but she's done and going home.

PM me if you want me to follow up and I'll get the school's contact info.
