Ask your students what color eyes they have and 99% will probably answer, "Eye color is black"...

Is this weird? Korean have very dark brown eyes but I wouldn't call them black... What do you think..? Is this wrong?

Mostly brown, but I've noticed (and I could be out to lunch) that my students with a Chedu-do background sometimes do have black eyes.

I always tell them their eyes are dark brown. I don't think they know "dark" and "light" in connection to colors.

I, too, believe Koreans have brown eyes. But I have seen this in other non-white groups of English learners. I have had Hispanic students tell me in English that their eyes are black. Even those who don't speak their parents home language (i.e., a Deaf student of hearing parents.) Which makes me think that maybe it is a cultural issue and it is our ethnocentrism that insists their eyes are brown.

Some Koreans actually do have BLACK eyes. It is freaky, as the pupil is the same color as the eye around it.

However 90% of Koreans have brown eyes...just most are a really dark brown.

Here is how to tell forsure, have some light going to their eyes, sunlight works best, in the light, you can see the true color of someone's eye.

I've always taught them that Korean eyes are brown, and I've even made my students cross out the part in Let's Go that says there is a such thing as black eyes. I never considered that it might be ethnocentrism that was making me insist that their eyes are brown.

I have never seen black colored eye, except on a rodent. It is impossible, though a very rich brown color isn't, and from a distance and with low lighting, might be mistaken for black.

To be honest I have never looked at the eyes. I'll look on Monday and see what % is black. That sounds cool, just black eyes.

I look at it like this: there are plenty of cultures that refer to dark brown eyes as black, so it's best to let it be. I wouldn't tell students that a book was wrong if it spelled tire, 'tyre', as it's spelled in the UK.

Believ me I have written less intelligent comments than that. The key is I'm trying to brainwash you into my way of thinking. Smile
