This article in Rolling Stone magazine lays out the case to call John McCain the ultimate political opportunist. Plus a philandering, mean-tempered, silver-spooned, gold-digger.

MR. FLIP-FLOP
In the end, the essential facts of John McCain's life and career the pivotal experiences in which he demonstrated his true character are important because of what they tell us about how he would govern as president. Far from the portrayal he presents of himself as an unflinching maverick with a consistent and reliable record, McCain has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to taking whatever position will advance his own career. He "is the classic opportunist," according to Ross Perot, who worked closely with McCain on POW issues. "He's always reaching for attention and glory." |

Definately an opportunist. Met his second wife while still married to his first...chased her around some party table in Honolulu...found out she was wealthy and in her 20s, he was in his 40s, and his then current wife was history.
The guy has so many houses as well...GWB is always in Crawford...imagine the press trying to keep track of which mansion McCain would be at any given moment. |

Most politicians are opportunists.
In fact wikipedia says as much.

Most politicians are "opportunists" to some extent at least (they aim to utilize political opportunities to their advantage), but the controversies surrounding the concept concern the exact relationship between "seizing a political opportunity" and the political principles being espoused |

I still haven't seen any evidence that Mr. Obama is a man of higher character than McCain or that he is more qualified for the job. |

How can a guy who votes with George Bush more than 90% of the time be a maverick.
He is a maverick much like the economy was 2 days from collapse, or the mission was accomplished or Saddam was procuring yellowcake or etc. Just political image creation for the mouth breathers.
Matt Taibbi, speaking in reference to a media that parrots talking points from politicians, said no matter how much shit you send up the flagpole, the motherfuckers will salute. You tell them McCain is a maverick and the next day they all refer to him as such. |
