Dan Quayle for Vice President!

He's tanned, ready and rested.

And he's experienced!!!
Quote:

In 1976, Quayle was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana's 4th congressional district, defeating eight-term incumbent Democrat J. Edward Roush. He won reelection in 1978 by the greatest percentage margin ever achieved to that date in the northeast Indiana district.

In 1980, at age 33, Quayle became the youngest person ever elected to the U.S. Senate from the state of Indiana, defeating three-term incumbent Democrat Birch Bayh. Making Indiana political history again, Quayle was reelected to the Senate in 1986 with the largest margin ever achieved to that date by a candidate in a statewide Indiana race. His 1986 victory was notable because several other Republican Senators elected in 1980 were not returned to office....

On August 17 at the Republican convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, George H. W. Bush called on Quayle to be his running mate in the 1988 United States presidential election....

President Bush named Quayle head of the Council on Competitiveness and the first chairman of the National Space Council. As head of the NSC he called for greater efforts to protect the earth against the danger of potential asteroid impacts....

Don't laugh. We haven't been hit by a single asteroid since Quayle was in office, have we?

He also has experience on the campaign trail, both running for Veep in 1988 and 1992, and for President in 2000. I think I heard some whisperings about his running for President this year, too.

Oh, and unlike the Republican's current candidate for vice president, Dan Quayle stands squarely against out of wedlock childbirth.

He's just the right age for the job, 61. Seasoned, but not fried.

Ditch Sarah Palin.

DAN QUAYLE FOR VEEP!

Asteroid impacts are nothing to laugh at. A 800-metre asteroid was discovered just in January heading on a path just six times the distance from the Earth to the Moon. It turned out that it was a binary asteroid system with diameters of 600 m and 200 m. If that had headed towards Earth we not only would have had only a few months to prepare, but because we didn't know it was a binary system until it was almost upon us we would have prepared for the wrong object.

http://www.universetoday.com/2008/07/14/binary-asteroid-glides-past-earth/

So what happens when a 600 metre asteroid hits the Earth?

http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

Let's say it hits 200 km away from the nearest town. Here's what happens to that town:

The projectile begins to breakup at an altitude of 54000 meters = 177000 ft
The projectile reaches the ground in a broken condition. The mass of projectile strikes the surface at velocity 16.8 km/s = 10.4 miles/s
The impact energy is 4.77 x 1019 Joules = 1.14 x 104MegaTons.
The broken projectile fragments strike the ground in an ellipse of dimension 1.16 km by 0.824 km

Crater shape is normal in spite of atmospheric crushing; fragments are not significantly dispersed.

Transient Crater Diameter: 7.06 km = 4.39 miles
Transient Crater Depth: 2.5 km = 1.55 miles

Final Crater Diameter: 9.16 km = 5.69 miles
Final Crater Depth: 0.576 km = 0.358 miles

The crater formed is a complex crater.
The volume of the target melted or vaporized is 0.3 km3 = 0.072 miles3
Roughly half the melt remains in the crater , where its average thickness is 7.67 meters = 25.2 feet

Time for maximum radiation: 0.433 seconds after impact

Visible fireball radius: 4.11 km = 2.56 miles
The fireball appears 4.68 times larger than the sun
Thermal Exposure: 2.66 x 105 Joules/m2
Duration of Irradiation: 94.3 seconds
Radiant flux (relative to the sun): 2.82

The major seismic shaking will arrive at approximately 40 seconds.
Richter Scale Magnitude: 7.3
Mercalli Scale Intensity at a distance of 200 km:

VI. Felt by all, many frightened. Some heavy furniture moved; a few instances of fallen plaster. Damage slight.

VII. Damage negligible in buildings of good design and construction; slight to moderate in well-built ordinary structures; considerable damage in poorly built or badly designed structures; some chimneys broken.

The ejecta will arrive approximately 206 seconds after the impact.
At your position the ejecta arrives in scattered fragments
Average Ejecta Thickness: 2.77 mm = 0.109 inches
Mean Fragment Diameter: 9.18 mm = 0.362 inches

The air blast will arrive at approximately 606 seconds.
Peak Overpressure: 10400 Pa = 0.104 bars = 1.48 psi
Max wind velocity: 23.5 m/s = 52.5 mph
Sound Intensity: 80 dB (Loud as heavy traffic)
Damage Description:

Glass windows will shatter.

Shhhhhhh!

That's the only disaster that hasn't happened during the Bush Administration.

Compared to 8 years of steadfast leadership? Not much.

Here's what McCain should do.

Announce(not that it really needs announcing) that the main area of concern facing the nation this election is the economy.

Then, announce that, while Sarah Palin has done a great job of connecting with average Americans, and would make a great v-p in normal times, these are most decidedly NOT normal times. Therefore, Palin will be leaving the ticket.

Replace Palin with someone whose main area of expertise is economics. Then, have that guy announce that he's come up with his own plan to prevent, or at least forestall and hopefully mitigate the effects of, the possible Depression. Outline the broad details of the plan to the public.

The McCain campaign then hits relentlessly upon two themes...

1. We've got a plan.

2. Where's Obama's plan?

Now, in all likelihood, there will be no agreement among economists that the McCain plan is even feasible. Doesn't really matter. As long as the campaign has a clear and distinct plan to present to the voters, one that can be supported by quotes from even a few Ivy League economists, the momentum will(I'm hypothesizing) shift to the GOP. Obama/Biden will be forced either to agree with McCain's proposals(and thus look like lame-assed me-tooers), or come up with criticisms of the proposals, as well as an alternative idea. That last tact would certainly be a possible one to pursue for the Democrats, but it will involve a certain amount of scrambling around. And by the time they get around to coming up with their critiques and their counterproposals, their may not be much of an audience left to listen, the momentum having shifted irreversibly to McCain.

Even if the GOP's proposals turned out to be not all that workable, the above plan at least gives McCain a face-saving way to drop Palin from the ticket.

Not feasible

Palin has turned out the volunteers. If he dumps her they'll feel betrayed.

Take a stand at the exact point where the asteroid is going to land. And promise to suspend his campaign until the asteroid turns around and goes home.

The irony of this thread is that Mr. Obama has a similar resume to that of Dan Quayle in 1988.

I've been out of the loop since the Bush/Kerry campaign.

What did Palin do exactly that warrants having her replaced? Have a meltdown?

Agreed. There's no way. The inclusion of Palin on the ticket has just about assured Obama's defeat (not that it was unlikely beforehand).

OTOH is on the right track. He just needs to be more audacious. Very Happy

McCain should call a major press conference and announce Palin's resignation from the ticket, pretty much as OTOH said. Then he should announce that he has one appointment to make before his own resignation.....Hillary.

It would bring in all the Hillary voters he was angling for with Palin's appointment and the Republicans would be so delighted to have a chance at winning that they'd momentarily forget their loathing of the Clintons.
