Anyone ever take the subway to a locations, hike in, and then camp overnight? It seems camping season is over (I guess I can put away my white pumps) but I love camping in the fall/early winter. Taking the car anywhere in the fall is silly with all of the leaf gawkers.

The Baegundae hike on Bukhansan (trail starts at the Doseonsa parking lot) has hike-in camping, but you need a permit of some sorts. My K-speaking girlfriend called them about how to get one. Their response, "It's hard."

Since it's usually packed full of people, I'd just get angry in that environment and didn't pursue a permit.

You can always take the subway to Dongincheon station, hop on a bus or taxi and got to the Domestic Ferry Terminal. Take a boat to a West Sea island and camp for free and alone on a beach. Make sure to do your research, some islands don't have amenities during the off-season.

It's not hard to get a camping permit. Just ask for one when you get there. It's 3000kwn for a standard 1-2man tent. However, you will share the area with loads of Koreans that will go climbing that next morning. Best bet is to go over to Suraksan and camp for free. Nobody cares, nobody checks, less of a crowd, empty at night, blah, blah, blah. I live at the base of that mountain off a trail so I know that place like the back of my hand. You could just hop the train to Wonju and go to Chiaksan bout 1.5hrs. I've spent many a nights on the mountains here and knowing that there was a good love motel just down at the bottom. It's nice though. I recommend it to anyone. PM me if you want to know any specifics.

That's good to know 5600. When I wanted to go, it was Chuseok last year. I knew it would be crowded and wanted a permit early. I don't know why the park people gave us bad info.

It came to me while sitting in traffic on HWY 50 for 4.5 hours. That kind of traffic seriously limits my desire to attend mountain bike races in Korea as well as going camping. heck, I've been told i got off luck with just 4.5 hours.

I REALLY like the island get away idea. I'm doing some research right now. It works well since I'm only about a W7,000 won cab ride from the Incheon pier.

Cheers,
Gilligan

Yeah, West Sea definitely.

Do a search for Deokjeokdo -- for its lush greenery and isolation it's probably the best of the bunch, and it's also one of the few islands with nice sandy beaches instead of mud.

If you're in Incheon and got a bike then definitely head out to the islands. Check the 'islands' posts on my blog. Ganghwa-do is cool with lots to see. Si-do is a easy to get to as well and has a nice little beach to camp on. Deokjeok-do is nice, but a little too far away for a weekend getaway.
