So I'm taking my dog home with me for Christmas. He's got his rabies shot and his health certificate and all that fun stuff.
My question is to anyone who has done this with a pet before. What are the steps I need to take with the airlines? Can I book my ticket online, and then call and let them know I'll have a dog? How does it work with him once I get back to the States? It's all a little confusing to me, and there's no way I'm leaving part of my family here.
I am simply trying to figure out how to make this as easy as possible on both my dog and myself.... I was going to just eat him and save myself the hassle, but I found I'm kind of attached to him and couldn't do it...
Thanks for any advice. |

Haha, does it help if I was a reluctant Redskin?
We're the RedHAWKS now by the way |

Makes me sad. I was a proud wearer of my cheap "Redskins Hockey Camp" painters cap.
Even the Miami didn't want it changed.
Good luck with the dog, if things don't go to plan, marinate with beer and french dressing. |

It's very easy - mine go back with me for holidays too. You must book your flight and the dogs flight at the same time, so you should call the airline rather than buy online to make sure the dog is accepted on the same flight. You have to book your own flight and then about 24 hours later they will phone you back and tell you if your dog is allowed on the same flight. Then you buy your ticket. When you arrive at the airport and check-in you will pay for your dog's fee at that time. |

Check your airlines website. You must probably get your dog's health certificate within 10 days of flying.
If your dog is flying in the cabin with you, when you get off the plane in the States you will just show his health papers as you go through customs and that is it. You walk out.
If he is flying the special cargo section then he will be waiting for you close to the customs area in his kennel. There is usually an agent standing close by watching for you, or people cooing at him, so you won't be able to miss your little guy. Anyways, once again the agent will look at the papers for a second and then you are off and running.
Don't forget on the return trip back to Korea you must get a new health certificate from a local vet for the airline, and a stamp from the USDA vet close to the airport. All pretty simple and straight forward. Pettravel.com has excellent airline information so check them out. |
