While I was sleeping at some point during the wee hours, probably 4 or 5 AM, this morning, I found myself at home in the USA scratching a lottery ticket off to find it was a cool 16.5 million dollar winner. I announced it to my friends and relatives and the 1st thing we discussed were taxes. Yes, taxes of all things. I thought well I get about 10 million dollars all to myself so I went out and bought a nice car, a nice place to live, and helped people who needed help. It was interesting to see how I got arrogant, overly confident, and cocky knowing I was finally rich. I then flew off to a really nice tropical resort in the southern Pacific and met people who knew all the secrets of the world. I flew, flew, and flew while I worked out in fitness centers of 5 star resorts and got really good at living this life as well as meeting so many great people who know how to live life to it's fullest potential with the aid of big money and all that time off with the ambition to live instead of being lazy.
Now I don't normally ever remember a dream much less think about all day long what I dreamed about, but this one was phenomenal all in animated high definition color like to the point you think you're living it. Heck, I don't even normally dream anymore so I don't know why this is. Never did I ever see a scratcher ticket worth a cool 16.5 million. The most I ever seen a scratcher ticket fetch was a measly $20. What wishful thinking my sleepy mind got myself into.
I actually believed while I slept in bed, but didn't know it, that I was getting all this money as the dream was so vivid and so real that I actually fell for it. I woke up and was so disgusted that it was too good to be true although possible, but unusually remember everything to a fine detail which is crazy unusual for me. I usually only know I had a dream, but don't remember what it was. This is a genesis world record dream experience to me. Why? That's the 16.5 million dollar question about it. What a brain fart I had.
What dreams have you had that just stick in your mind long after waking up? |

I had really vivid dreams the last couple of nights running, both of which I remember well.
Apparently, dreams are remembered best if they happen right before you wake up--like, even if you have a ripper at three AM, you'll never remember it so well unless you happen to wake up at 3:05. But, if you wake up at 5, hit snooze, and then wake up at 6, the dreams you had at 5:50 will be remembered. Maybe it's true, I dunno--seems legit in my case though.
So, two days ago: it was a wierd one, because I wasn't either of the principle characters, nor was I involved in the dream at all. I was purely observing, as John McCain and Mark Hamill went on a mad adventure somewhere in southern California circa 1979. It was like 'Corvette Summer," kinda. They were driving a car while sitting on the hood of it, and nobody had the wheel, and they were absolutely cranked on blow, and both apologizing to each other profusely for being role models and heroes to the youth of america while simultaneously being utterly corrupt drug addicts. That was their bond and commonality. They were contrite, really, but also really amped up on their drug, and got into a fight with a bunch of bell-bottomed thug surfer guys who were, I think, from 'Point Break.' Don't remember much more except that Mark Hamill was crying at the end because he was never really respected as an actor, and McCain was claiming that he never knew that Hamill was Skywalker, and that in fact he didn't even know what a Skywalker was, but would've never rolled with him in the first place if he'd known he was an action figure. "Hypocrite," I thought.
Last night: I dreamt I was hanging out at Johnny Depp's house. Nice house. He had all this money, and was kind of embarassed about it, and I was trying to explain to him that even though I'd never really liked his movies for the most part I really was very happy for him that he'd be making 61 million dollars for his next Pirates of the Yadada movie, cause he seemed like a pretty decent guy for an actor., I was trying to convince him to give me a million dollars, but without sounding needy or desperate.
"It'd change my life, man; I'd never have to work again, you see," I said.
He said "yeah, that's cool, maybe I will do that, but even though it seems like a lot of money to you, I'll never really see any of it, it all goes to taxes...I'm just breaking even..."
He had this strange machine that he had paid a lot of money for. It was a kind of magic catapult that looked like an air conditioner. You put anything into the socket-cavity part on top, and it then shot out projectiles, at incredible velocity, towards whatever you aimed it at. We were throwing all sorts of stuff into it--keychains, pots and pans, bottles, books, ashtrays, and I think at one point a shoe, and the catapulter chewed it all up and then fired the stuff out through the windows (glass all a-smashing) at the people outside. It was fun but scary and I kept on getting bits of shrapnel in my eyes. I impressed him and his other hangers-on by braving the blood and semi-blindness and pretending I was really into it. All for the million bucks I hoped he'd give me...really I felt totally outclassed, and wanted to get the hell out of there before his famous friends showed up to expose me for the middle class hack that I am.
Both very vivid and cinematic dreams, both dreamt after waking once and hitting snooze. Yay for the dream life! Dreams make a boring patch of my life much more intense. |

About remembering dreams: Yes, dreams closer to your waking time will be remembered. Normally around 3-4am, assuming we go to bed at an average time of around midnight, we are at the DEEPEST stage of sleep. Waking up during these dreams can sometimes cause fatigue, especially if you don't go back to sleep. Waking up in the night can be problematic because it disrupts the natural sleep cycle - you might end up dreaming several times, one for each time you fall back to sleep. This causes the most fatigue and leaves you feeling worst for wear in the morning, the opposite result of what a good nights sleep is supposed to be. If you ever lay in on weekends, try waking up, and then going back to sleep - you may have the craziest of dreams during this stage of light-sleeping. Also if you oversleep, your brain goes into overdrive with the wacky dreams.
Normally those who don't get enough sleep, or get "just the right amount" of sleep don't ever recall their dreams. |

what scottjb said: true, true, i think.
One vicious circular possibility of this whole 'lots and lots of vivid dreams and then waking up crusty and sour' thing is, you go on to have a lousy day. Your life begins to take a downer spiral; you don't like your loved ones anymore, and your waking hours suck. So, what do you do? Sleep more! Why not? Dreams are the best part of the day.
Then, of course, you sleep too much, you dream too much, you wake up for work not freshed but instead, scabbed over; your day sucks, you can't wait to get back to sleep...and so on...and so on...
Happily, I'm pretty happy these days, and have good times when awake. I remember though some years ago falling into a cycle very like the one I outlined above. Good to not be in that anymore.
Still like my weird dreams though! |

If you try to write down your dreams, your ability and vividness of dreams goes WAY up....dream recall can be greatly improved...also you dream multiple dreams in a night...
and course there is always lucid dreaming |

I had a dream once that I was traveling somewhere in India. Now, by pure chance, a former President George W. Bush was nearby. Perhaps, he was a block away or so. Suddenly, someone fired a gun at Bush, but the bullet missed him and wounded me in the stomach. At that point, I was thinking this is not good. So much for all of my plans in life. Then, of course, I woke up. That was a real relief to still be alive!
If I ever do decide to travel to India, I am going to have to make sure that George Bush will not be there. |
