October is the month with the highest crime rate, while Saturdays saw more crimes than other days of the week, statistical analysis released by the Supreme Public Prosecutors Office shows.

◆ October is the cruelest month

Of last years 1.97 million major crimes, some 186,000 occurred in October. May was the month with the second highest crime rate (182,000), whereas February saw the lowest rate with 131,000 cases.

Saturday was the most criminal day of the week with 15.5 percent, followed by Friday (14.8 percent), Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (14 percent each), and Monday (13.4 percent). Night time was naturally the most dangerous time with 38.2 percent of crimes being committed between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., followed by afternoon (noon to 6 p.m.) with 21.2 percent and evening (6 p.m.-8 p.m.) with 9.7 percent.

◆ Unsafe Gangnam

In Seoul, crimes were most frequently committed in the affluent Gangnam district (32,281 cases), while Seocho (23,719 cases) and Songpa (20,536 cases) ranked second and third. All three districts are located south of the Han River.

The safest areas in Seoul were Geumcheon (9,188 cases), Dobong (9,358 cases), Yongsan (10,312 cases) and Gangbuk (10,998 cases) districts.

People in their 30s or 40s committed 49 percent of the overall crimes while those under 20 were responsible for 4.4 percent.

Some 0.6 percent of crimes were committed by foreigners, with Chinese accounting for half, followed by Mongols, Americans, Taiwanese, Vietnamese and Thais.
