Good news for those who look at those sexy Samsung laptops and cry you can't get a version with an English o/s and driver CD. Expect prices to be lower in the export market and Koreans to be in the dark.

The logical move for SS. Sticking to one's core competency of commoditized, high volume, 'just in time' manufacturing widgets make better business sense. Yet another reminder that moving upstream into the higher growth, higher-value, advanced technologies arena as a 'fast follower - me too' player won't work. A shame given SS deep pockets and global reach.

I believe that Samsung supplied Dell with a lot laptops that were re-branded as Dell. Part of the agreement was that Samsung couldn't sell Samsung branded computers for a while. I guess that agreement has lapsed and Samsung is going full force into the US market.

There was an article 5 or so months ago, that had SS moaning that they were losing market share and leaving the US market.

They do make damn sexy looking laptops though. I saw their MSI Wind clone in e Mart lat night. Looks beautiful, way more professional than the Wind but a full 100,000 won more expensive, for identical specs.

I noticed that there are at least two or three others names selling the MSI Wind. I imagine they are all made at one Korean plant and re-braded. The chief differences were in batteries. Everything else was identical.

With notebooks so cheap now in North America, I wish them luck. It is a tough market to get into, so they will have to give more for the buck than the big guys like Dell and Compaq/HP do.

Can someone say embedded Wimax chip?? SS owns the Wimax infrastructure in the US and it's time to begin force-feeding the American masses. Methodical and shrewd thinking Koreans.... however, execution is a whole notha' ballgame.

Yeah you can pick up a decent entry level for $500 and a decent one for $800. What are they going for in Korea these days?
