I have inquired with my employer, who assures me that my information will be submitted faithfully by our school's accountant, about the deadline for application for the tax refund some of us foreigners are eligible for.

The director states that the deadline is the 'end of the month' and showed me a notice from the govt which seemed to state just that. However, according to various blog sources, the deadline is this Monday, Oct. 20th.

Which way is it? I'm working on finding sources...got any?

I also asked whether or not I needed to personally fill out or sign the application document(s) and was told that it was not necessary, that it was the school's/director's responsibility to authorize and submit. Any perspective on that?

I don't want (or wish for anybody else) to miss out on this deserved money due to a mixup or last-minute responses.

are you referring to the fuel tax rebate that my uni just told me about? they said I had to sign up for internet banking (sigh is the pain in the arse that's going to be worth 240000?) to get it.

That's the one. And similarly, I was told that it would be remitted by direct deposit.

I'm assuming that only the people paying Korean income tax is eligible.

I guess I'm not eligible. I don't pay any taxes now because I am tax exempt for two years.

According to the best info that my employer and I have, you must have been employed and paying taxes throughout the entirety of 2007 making more than 24mil. I meet those criteria.


My primary concern is the deadline. The 20th of a month, on a Monday, seems like a particularly arbitrary deadline date for anything. My employer insists the end of the month will be fine. I would hate to miss out on the refund because of shoddy info/assumptions.

So I did a little research online about this tax refund.

Since all the information is in Korean i'll just give you the gist of what I can make out ^^

The form has a spot to check if you are a Korean national or a foreigner, and the website doesn't mention foreigners not being able to get it.

However, there are some stipulations.

You have to have paid taxes (now granted as a foreigner you likely have a large deduction on taxable income so the overall amount of taxes you paid was minimal)

You need to have been employeed during 2008, and worked during 2007.

The refund will be based off your 2007 income
Total income needs to be below 36 million won OR taxable income of less than 24 million won... or something like that.. kinda hard to tell.

There is some scale for how much you recieve the most is 240,000 and the smallest amount is like 80,0000.

IF you qualify and have bank account the government will deposit the money in your account. I think you need online banking to check and see how much you got before the actual deposit.

sorry if this is hijacking your thread but...

Does anyone know where i can get proof of my paying in to taxes last year? The school I've worked at has now closed so I can't go back to them. Is there a website i can get i toff of? I tried to google the Korean National Tax office. But none of the websites work.
