I have a question for those of you who hate/dislike Itaewon or find it seedy, disgusting, dirty, etc.

Where are you originally from?

No, I expected a lie.

Anyway, if you'd been to Harlem recently you'd know that it's completely gentrified.

Yes I was kidding.

However, you do have a valid point. How people view Itaewon is compared to where they are from. I come from a pretty conservative city so Itaewon looks like a cesspool to me. But if you came from New York, Itaewon is like Paris.

South Africa.

Here's my take. If I wanted to hang out with sleazy Nigerians/Ghanaians/Senegalese etc, I would have stayed at home. We have plenty in JNB. If I wanted to hang out with a group of 19 year old GIs who are glad that they can drink, and haven't had the opportunity to blow off steam at University, well I would have enlisted. If I wanted to hang out with the throngs of other Westerners (I'm urged to use the word misfits, but i'll refrain) I would have been better off in London (where I've lived), New York, or just about anywhere other than Korea.

I have been to Itaewon 5 times in 2 years. Two of those times was JUST to grab some pizza with the gf (there's one place she really likes). (While I don't live "in" Seoul...I go there 2-3 times a week).

For the record, Itaewon is the ONLY place in Korea my gf says she feels uncomfortable in. While I don't feel uncomfortable there...I'd definitly call it the armpit of Korea.

I don't like Itaewon anymore because it is so much less of a shit hole than it used to be. A lot less fun these days.

I pop in during the day every 3 or 4 months to get some grub at 3 Alley Pub and flirt with Ocean at Syd & Mel's, then I get on the bus home before the sun goes down.

Oh, and I'm from Portland via New Mexico. It kind of reminds me of the Central avenue area of Albuquerque.

Sorry, man. It's just a glorified college strip that fused with a ghetto.

...have you ever been to New York?! Your image of it sounds like it's from bad 80s movies...seriously, do people eat road kill in your home town?

I live in Itaewon, and I really enjoy it.

I'm from Los Angeles.
